Nov. 05--A man who prosecutors say accidentally killed a friend while showing off a gun pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death and was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday, according to court records.
Paris D. Walker-Rush, 26, admitted Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter and being a felon using a weapon in the death of David Kennedy, 24, in the 5200 block of South Cornell Avenue in the East Hyde Park neighborhood Nov. 21, 2014, according to court records.
Walker-Rush was sentenced to five years in prison by Cook County Judge Mary Margaret Brosnahan, who gave him credit for 349 days spent in Cook County Jail, according to court records. Once he is released, Walker-Rush will have to spend a year on supervised release, according to records.
The shooting occurred at Walker-Rush's home, prosecutors said. Walker-Rush, Kennedy and two other men were hanging out and smoking marijuana, prosecutors said when Walker-Rush was charged.
At one point, Walker-Rush gave Kennedy a .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun to look at. Kennedy returned the gun to Walker-Rush, who then pointed it at Kennedy's face and the gun discharged, prosecutors said.
Kennedy was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head inside the apartment on Cornell about 9:05 p.m. that day, authorities said at the time. A gun was found next to Kennedy's body, prosecutors said, and Walker-Rush was taken into custody.
In 2013, Walker-Rush was found guilty of one count of felony manufacturing/delivery of cannabis, for which he was sentenced to 24 months of probation.
