5-year-old boy thrown from Mall of America making 'small steps' toward recovery

Less than a week after a 5-year-old boy was tossed off a third-floor balcony at Mall of America, the youngster continues to make "small steps towards the healing process."

"Each new day is a good day. (His) recovery is expected to be ongoing for a long time, while it's hard to estimate costs, this will change everything for their family and require much of their time and focus," a family friend wrote on his the boy's GoFundMe page Wednesday.

The boy, whose name is Landen, remained in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, an attorney for the family said Tuesday.

"The family appreciates the outpouring of support from across the country, reassuring them of the overall goodness of humanity and of God's will," attorney Stephen Tillitt said.

Landen sustained "significant injuries" after falling around 40 feet in Friday's attack, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said last week. The GoFundMe for him and his family has raised more than $850,000 in five days.

Police say the shocking act of violence came at the hands of Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who was charged with premeditated first-degree murder. Aranda has not yet entered a plea.

He was allegedly "looking for someone to kill," police said last week.

Aranda had previous run-ins with the law at the massive Minnesota mall dating back to 2015, including one incident in which he was charged after throwing items off of a balcony.
