5 veteran QBs Eagles could target if Nate Sudfeld misses time with wrist injury

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a dramatic loss at quarterback when Nate Sudfeld left Thursday’s preseason opener against the Titans with what appeared to be a very serious left wrist injury. Sudfeld was hurt in the first half when he was thrown to the ground by Titans defensive tackle Isaiah Mack after throwing the ball away on a third down.

Sudfeld was 10 for 18 for 177 yards and a TD with a passer rating of 107.9 before leaving. With Sudfeld leaving in an air cast and possibly lost for a lengthy amount of time, here are five veteran quarterbacks the Eagles could consider if they don’t feel confident in Cody Kessler:

Josh Rosen

If the Dolphins truly are tanking for Tua Tagovailoa or Trevor Lawrence in 2020, then trading Rosen to the Eagles lines up another draft pick for Miami while giving Philadelphia a guy who looks to be settling into a career as a backup after being drafted No. 10 overall in 2018.

Josh Johnson

After Alex Smith went down with his broken leg last November, Colt McCoy followed suit with an ankle injury of his won, leaving Mark Sanchez as the lone quarterback on the roster. The Redskins scooped Johnson up in December. Johnson played well in spot relief for Washington, is athletic and has enough discipline to not blow a game.

Matt Cassel

The former Lions quarterback hasn’t officially retired and could bring a calm influence to the Eagles locker room to place behind Carson Wentz. The 37-year-old Cassel has also played for the Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. Cassel has passed for 17,449 yards and 104 touchdowns in his career.

Brock Osweiler

Osweiler has played with five teams since entering the league in 2012. His 2015 season in Denver made him look like a star had arrived, as Houston then signed Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million free-agent contract. Osweiler made just 14 starts for the Texans in 2016, then was traded to Cleveland in March 2017 and was cut before playing a game.

Osweiler was the backup in Denver and Miami the last two seasons and has posted career numbers of 37 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.

Case Keenum

Keenum will likely be the odd man out, and although Eagles fans famously remember the former Vikings quarterback for his disastrous outing in the 2017 NFC title game, he could be a serviceable backup that Howie Roseman wouldn’t have to give a ton up for via trade.
