5 things we spotted from Celtic training as Jota debuts new look but Kyogo absence rings alarm bells

We're just days away from the Premiership season resuming and it's Celtic who kick us off as they take on Hibs at Parkhead on Monday.

But we're not quite there yet and Ange Postecoglou has been putting his players through the wringer in a typically intense Thursday session.

The Celtic side that runs out on Monday night is likely to look vastly different to the one that signed off with a win over St Johnstone as Postecoglou has three new first-team signings to choose from.

There was no sign of Kyogo again but he does have one or two key stars back from injury as the Hoops look to push Rangers all the way in the title race.

All of that was evident at training as a freshened-up squad looked to impress the gaffer ahead of Monday's restart.

And here are five things we spotted.

Careful now...

As if Jota's rockstar good looks weren't endearing enough, he's gone and thrown a headband into the mix.

The Portuguese winger was back in team training for the first time since early December, and judging by the look of this Boli Bolingoli challenge, his teammates weren't going easy.

Monday's clash might come too soon for the on-loan Benfica star but Postecoglou certainly wasn't ruling it out as he said: "It's good to have him back. He was out medium-to-long-term but he's rehabbed really well.

"He joined in team training today. We'll see, he won't be far off.

"If it's not Monday, he'll have the next couple of weeks to be available. He feels really good."

Friendly competition

Joe Hart and Scott Bain have been the two keepers trusted by Postecoglou so far as the Australian has immediately solved a costly problem between the sticks.

And while it's Hart who has a vice-grip on the No.1 jersey as things stand, that doesn't mean the competition isn't intense in training.

The two stoppers were seen sharing a laugh as they battled for possession of the ball in front of a training dummy that clearly doesn't get the joke, judging by the expression on its face.

But it's Hart who appears to have won out and he'll expect to retain his spot on Monday evening.

Setting the standards

The new boys haven't had much time to make their mark but it seems Reo Hatate isn't messing about.

The new No.41 adds some guile and style to Postecoglou's midfield and he was spotted showing his teammates how it's done.

James McCarthy watched on as he brought the ball under control and Reo will be hoping his arrival can spur his midfield competition on to kick things up a gear in the second half of the season.

Where's Kyogo?

Once again though there was no sign of Kyogo, who has been away over the winter break to recover from injury.

The Japanese hitman picked up a knock against St Johnstone before the shutdown but Ange Postecoglou insisted at the time it was nothing to worry about.

However fans have been concerned that he's yet to be spotted at training.

It's possible he's just been given some extra time to rest up and will be back in from Friday. But the longer he's absent, the more alarm bells will ring ahead of Monday night.

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Postecoglou has been unflappable since arriving at Celtic Park and he once again appeared to be taking the pressure in his stride.

You wouldn't want to be in his shoes on Monday night with so many new and returning players vying to break into a side that was flying before the break.

But accompanied by Stephen McManus, he watched on with a smile as his players battled it out for a place in his team.

As they say, it's a good problem to have - and one he is relishing after all the injury and covid crises' he's had to endure so far.
