5 things we spotted at Scotland training as Che Adams meets new teammates and Lyndon Dykes goes platinum

Scotland and Steve Clarke are ready to kick off another qualification campaign that could finally take us to a first World Cup in 24 years.

The road to Qatar starts on Thursday and Austria will present a formidable foe at Hampden.

But when compared to pot one and two teams across the UEFA contingent of countries, it's clear we've been handed a mighty good chance with Denmark, Israel, Moldova and the Faroe Islands rounding off the group.

And Clarke put his charges - including new man Che Adams - through their paces as he caught up with his heroes for the first time since the last international break where Scotland punched their ticket to Euro 2020.

Here are five things we spotted from the morning session at Edinburgh's Oriam complex.

Reunited

Jack Hendry and Greg Taylor caught up (SNS Group / SFA)

Jack Hendry has been one of the biggest revelations in Celtic's season. The problem for the Hoops is their on-loan centre-back is starring about 450 miles away in Belgium. Hendry is set to return to Glasgow to play at Hampden but whether he'll be back in the city's east end is a different matter with KV Oostende keen as mustard to keep the defender. He might have been providing old team-mate Greg Taylor a bit of gossip on that matter and he'll also have caught up with old pals Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie at the Oriam. Finding a TV station showing Belgian Jupiler League games is difficult back here - so it will be an interesting watch to see how he's improved if he gets considerable game time.

Adams meets the gang

Andy Considine showed Che Adams around (SNS Group / SFA)

Scotland have a brand new striker as Adams committed his international future to Clarke's side last week, in a story first revealed by Record Sport. And who better to show him around the new gaff than the Boogieman himself, Andy Considine? It's almost a certainty the Southampton striker will start at least one of the qualifiers to tie him to the Tartan Army for his career. Some critics have questioned his call to sign up for the Scotland revolution after the hard part of qualification was completed without him but his career was only just beginning back when Alex McLeish approached him in 2017. It's safe to say nobody will be arguing that point if he can become a Euros hero. Just don't ask him about stag dos, Che...

Dykes goes platinum

Dykes just ended a barren run in front of goal for QPR (SNS Group / SFA)

He's the man with a million hairdos and this latest platinum blonde effort is rather conservative by Lyndon Dykes' madcap standards. We've been treated to a wild rainbow buzz cut in support of the NHS and a light blue number also set tongues wagging at the height of transfer speculation linking him to Rangers. But if it was a subtle hint, it turned out to be a wink towards Queens Park Rangers. Clarke looked aghast when he eyed the trim but he's got a lot to smile about after Dykes finally ended a goalless run of 20 matches with a strike against Reading at the weekend and the striker was in great spirits as usual.

Keeping sharp

Craig Gordon is expected to be the No.1 in David Marshall's absence (SNS Group / SFA)

Craig Gordon could be in line for a return to the international fold at 38 years old with Scotland sweating over the fitness of penalty hero David Marshall. He's been in fine form for Hearts in the Championship as they romp the second tier at the first time of asking - and the Jambos could be just one win from the title upon his return to Gorgie from Scotland duty. And Gordon is taking training as seriously as ever, getting down low in a sequence of stretches in this snap.

Gaffer's watchful eye

Clarke is now eyeing up a place at Qatar 2022 (SNS Group / SFA)

It's not all fun and games though and there stands a man with plenty of big decisions to make. You don't end a 23-year curse by standing still and his bold squad announcement was proof of that. Clarke always cuts a stern figure on the training pitch and will have plenty of ideas in mind for how best to tackle the tricky proposition of Austria, who will have the vast majority of their German-based stars in tow, followed by old foes Israel and then the Faroe Islands.
