5 things we spotted at Rangers training as Steven Gerrard looks for signs of fight

Frustrated Steven Gerrrard admitted today he's hardly got a wink of sleep since Sunday as he turns over the events of Tynecastle in his mind.

While the result won't change with reflection, the Scouser knows that the time spent addressing his side's failures might prevent the next shock result.

Since the winter break, Rangers ' season has veered wildly of course and defeat in the Scottish Cup means that they will remain trophyless for another campaign unless there is a league or Europa League miracle.

With Celtic 12 points ahead at this stage, the campaign now becomes a testing ground for the plans and changes Gerrard wants to implement for next year.

And at the Rangers Training Centre today he put his men through a session ahead of a now crucially important match against Hamilton on Wednesday.

Here are five things we spotted.

Hagi leads from the front

The Romanian is a superb technical player but has also grafted hard since he arrived in Govan so it's no surprise to see him at the front of the group, leading the way. While many who had knowledge of the kid's game talked up his quality on the ball, there were question marks over his ability to adapt to the rough and tumble of the Scottish game. These fears look to have been unfounded and Gerrard has already praised the 21-year-old for his leadership qualities and it seems likely that the manager will want to push the button on a deal to make his loan move permanent. A £4m fee has been mooted and the Ibrox club are thought to have first refusal as part of the agreement that brought him from Belgian side Genk in January.

Tavernier makes his presence felt

He's not everybody's idea of a Rangers captain and while Tavernier isn't the most vocal on the pitch you often see him making demands of his colleagues in training. While Richard Gough and Terry Butcher are better fits for the archetypal Rangers leader, in these very different times, perhaps the Englishman's more measured approach more of a mesh with the mentality of the young men currently plying their trade in the game. How would players today hold up to a Butcher or a Gough blast? Tavernier hasn't replicated the form of last year, when he was prolific on penalties and creating assists. If he can get back in the groove their's no reason he can't reinstate himself as a fans favourite.

Morelos back in action

For good and bad Morelos is always at the centre of the action and today was no different. The Colombian missed the Hearts game in controversial fashion after he failed to return on time from a trip back to Colombia. There is no doubt that the 29 goal striker is crucial to the Ibrox gameplan but he has been miles off the pace since coming back in January. With only one goal in his last seven games the Europa League top-scorer has taken his eye off the ball and, with Florian Kamberi's eye-catching form since signing, his place is no longer guarenteed. A fit and in-form Morelos would be a huge boost both to the club and the striker's chances of getting the big money move south he has always desired, but it seems he will now have to prove himself all over again to a sceptical boss.

Hats off to Defoe

The diminutive striker has always looked after himself, becoming a vegan before it was trendy and avoiding the demon drink that has blighted so many careers, but the way he has got himself back early from his calf injury is testament to the conditioning of the 37-year-old. While he hasn't been a first pick since arriving at Ibrox he's been a reliable back-up and will be desperate to get back amongst the goals to reward his boss for the faith he had shown in bringing him to the club.

Gerrard looks for desire

(Rangers FC/PA Images)

Gerrard was known for his passion as a player and he said today that he will be watching his players closely to see who is up for the fight against Hamilton. Gerrard knows that with the Accies fighting for their lives and his players performing below their usual level, it could be a tricky fixture despite home advantage. With the team under-performing in the league and Scottish Cup, it's imperative for Gerrard's future he doesn't drop any points at home and starts to find the form that so impressed before the break.
