5 things we spotted at Rangers training as quadruple threat strike team offers unseen options

Steven Gerrard may be facing a relatively straightforward Europa League qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps but he must have cast his eyes over training today and felt settled he now has the strike power to blast out of potentially dangerous situations.

With four top quality forwards to now choose from in the form of Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe, the manager has options for every scenario.

While Morelos is aggressive and works the back line, Defoe is a fox in the box. While itten offers a targetman with technical quality, Roofe gives you a perfect false nine adept at dropping into space.

Regardless, the Scouser will be only too aware of Celtic 's shock 1-0 loss against the same opposition back in 2016 in Brendan Rodgers' first game in charge.

Rangers have the advantage of having vast experience on a plastic pitch having faced Kilmarnock, Livingston and Hamilton in recent years but know that it can be a leveler, especially in heat when the surface can become slow and sticky.

But they have also played at the Victoria Stadium before, when thrashing St Joseph's in last season's qualifiers.

Here are five things we noticed from Wednesday's training session.

Fit and firing

(DAILY RECORD)

While we know exactly what Defoe will provide Rangers, Itten remains something of an enigma. The Swiss striker showed in flashes against Kilmarnock what he's all about and will be keen to get back to full fitness after an injury disruption that ruled him out of Switzerland duty. The big, elegant attacker isn't your typically battering ram targetman and footage from his spell at St Gallen shows he has both an eye for goal and a deceptively good touch. If Gerrard wants to get him up to speed there will be few better places to pitch him in than against the part-timers from Gibraltar.

Caught between a rock and a hard place

(DAILY RECORD)

It's a bleakly beautiful backdrop for football but the location also serves as a fitting metaphor for Rangers' trip. Win big and people will say 'You only beat part-timers'. Anything less will yield criticism. Scottish results have proven over the years that there are almost no depths to which we are not capable of sinking and while this team have proven themselves to be highly competent in the face of difficult Euro challenges, they must remain focused - a point Gerrard was keen to emphasise in his press conference.

Somebody to lean on

(DAILY RECORD)

Ryan Kent has replaced Morelos as the main man this term but could the Colombian be about to explode back to form and give the Englishman some help? He certainly looked the part during his spell on the pitch against Dundee United on Saturday. A buzz-bomb of activity throughout, Morelos was back to the harrying, aggressive figure that we all know from the early part of last season. If he can get himself back into that kind of form, Rangers will have a difficulty not shoehorning him back into the XI.

Keeper club

(DAILY RECORD)

Few would have imagined Jon McLaughlin grabbing the number one spot when he arrived on a free from Sunderland at the start of the summer. The former Hearts man was expected to deputise but a combination of excellent form and Allan McGregor's injury woes have allowed him to take the mantle. While he hasn't been heavily tested during seven league games without conceding, it's his assured play with the ball at his feet that will give his manager pause for thought. While in goalkeeping terms, it seems inarguable that McGregor still has the edge, McLaughlin's composure on the ball and calm nature might be considered a better fit going forward.

A clear message

(DAILY RECORD)

The manager has made it quite clear there can be no slip ups and the players will be under pressure to deliver a professional performance. While some have wondered if the best thing for a title tilt might be an early departure from the stresses of the Europa League, the financial benefits make participation crucial for the club. A more difficult third round tie, probably with Willem II of the Netherlands awaits but make no mistake, Europe will still be a focus even in this title race to end them all.
