5 things we spotted at Rangers training as Alfredo Morelos fronts up amid transfer talk

New season, same old challenges for Rangers as they prepare to get a massive Premiership campaign up and running against Kilmarnock.

Steven Gerrard knows the straightforward task; stop Celtic reaching 9 in a row.

Nothing else will do for a Rangers support desperate to end almost a decade wait for a top flight title.

And it all gets underway with a trip to a familiar venue, Rugby Park.

Just the seven meetings between the two sides last season and, crucially, Rangers picked up just two points from 12 in the four league meetings with Killie and Gerrard knows that tally needs to significantly improve if his side are to have a serious shot at the title.

Gerrard put his players through their paces at Auchenhowie on Friday less than 24 hours after they ground out a goalless draw against Progres Niederkorn in Luxembourg to secure a Europa League third qualifying round spot.

He'll be hoping for better at Rugby Park. But there's injury concerns and selection headaches facing the boss.

Here's five things we spotted from training ahead of the curtain raiser.

Morelos fronts up

He's never far from the headlines and Alfredo Morelos is back centre stage again this week after an alleged offer from China worth, apparently, £30million to the player was KB'd. All this without a bid having been made as well.

Anyway, whatever you make of all that, it's not stopped Gerrard speaking out on the speculation surrounding the Premiership's top goalscorer from last season. Gerrard wants the Colombian to front up for the media and declare once and for all where his future lies. With four years left on his Ibrox contract there's certainly no panic for Rangers to cash in on their prize asset. Morelos, who has also attracted interest from Eintracht Frankfurt, AC Milan, Crystal Palace and West Ham, certainly wasn't hiding at Auchenhowie on Friday as he played up to the cameras. But we're still waiting to hear his thoughts on the transfer talk. Maybe Morelos will finally break his silence after Sunday's clash at Killie? The Light Blues faithful would certainly like to hear from their hero.

Fod for thought

He's the ultimate Mr Professional, Wes Foderingham. And he will get his chance to stake his claim for the number one jersey on Sunday in place of the suspended Allan McGregor. But for how much longer will he be happy to play second fiddle? The Englishman never put a foot wrong when called upon by Gerrard last season including in the 2-0 Old Firm victory over Celtic in May. He's a class act but as he enters the final 12 months of his contract questions are being asked about his future. Second choice is no place to be for a goalkeeper in their prime and it's perhaps surprising that there have been no bids for the 28-year-old.

Gerrard has two top quality goalkeepers at his disposal but keeping Foderingham happy could be a challenge.

Gerrard ponders game plan

Penny for them Steven. Gerrard was deep in thought throughout the session as he finalised a gameplan for Sunday's clash at Rugby Park. Four trips to Kilmarnock last season heralded only one win - coming in the Betfred Cup 12 months ago - and Rangers' title hopes were seriously hurt by the dropping of 10 points to the Ayrshiremen. Gerrard knows the important of a fast start this time round. He doesn't want to be playing catch-up. But it's a serious test of his side to start with. Killie and the artificial surface have proved to be problematic for the Light Blues and the Ibrox gaffer has to get his selection spot on.

Whether he goes with Morelos - who scored an incredible 10 times against Killie last season - or Jermain Defoe in attack remains to be seen. But there's selection dilemmas all over the park too with a choice of four centre backs and an embarrassment of riches in the middle where Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and Greg Docherty will vie for three starting spots.

Davis still a doubt

(SNS)

Steven Davis missed the trip to Progres Niederkorn on Thursday with a hamstring problem and is touch and go for Sunday's journey down the M77. Gerrard said the Northern Ireland skipper will be given a fitness test on Saturday to determine whether he will be okay to take part on Killie's plastic. It sounds doubtful. Which would be a major concern for Rangers given both Davis' excellent early season firm and the pedestrian performance without him in Luxembourg.

He might be 34 but Davis still has the ability to open up defences and control the tempo of games when under pressure. He's vital to Gerrard's game plan this season but, as with any muscle complaints, there's little point risking the player for one game particularly on the synthetic surface.

Happy world of Aribo

(SNS)

His facial expression might not tell you so but Joe Aribo has settled into life at Ibrox with minimum fuss, proving exactly why there was such a clamour for his signature a month ago. The former Charlton midfielder is energetic, creative and dogged in the tackle too. No wonder the fans have taken to him. They are exactly the characteristics needed for an away day at Kilmarnock and Aribo will surely make his Premiership debut at Rugby Park on Sunday.
