5 things to know about new Jaguars QB Nick Foles

With Nick Foles officially signing Wednesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars now have a No. 1 quarterback and can begin looking for more complimentary pieces to the offense. Here are five facts to know on the journeyman quarterback as he begins his career in Duval:

Nick Foles

Height: 6-5
Weight: 243
Birthday: January 20, 1989

College: Arizona
NFL stats: 58 games played, 18.5 sacks, 24 tackles for losses
Scouting Combine profile

– Foles initially began his collegiate career at Michigan State in 2007, however, he transferred to Arizona a year later. In 2009, he became the Wildcats’ starter until 2011 and was drafted in the third-round of the 2012 draft when the team had Chip Kelly as their head coach. He ultimately finished his college career with 10,068 total passing yards, a 66.8 completion percentage, 67 touchdowns and 33 interceptions.

– Foles could’ve been a Division 1 basketball player and received letters from Georgetown and Arizona State coming out of high school. When looking at his highlights from high school, it’s easy to see why Foles was a long range sharp-shooter who could drain 3-pointers at will.

Rumor has it that he and former Arizona football teammates Gronkowski, Juron Criner and Trevin Wade took on the No. 18 ranked Arizona Wildcats basketball team for two pickup games, both of which were won by Foles and company. The first game supposedly went down with a score of 9-2, according to Wade, but the score of Game 2 isn’t known.

– On top of his first stint with the Eagles Foles was a journeyman quarterback making stops with the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams. Of those tenures, his 2013 season was his best, which resulted in him going to the Pro Bowl. Aside from that, however, his stints with the Rams and Chiefs were uneventful. That eventually led to a resurgence with the Eagles under the wing of Doug Pederson.

– When it comes to postseason play, Foles is pretty clutch. As it stands, he has the highest postseason completion percentage in NFL history (73.0 percent) when looking at quarterbacks who’ve thrown at least 50 passes. Additionally, he’s the only signal-caller in NFL history to accumulate a passer rating over 100 in his first two postseason starts. The first came in 2013 against the New Orleans Saints (105.0 rating) and the next game came against the Atlanta Falcons (100.1 rating) in 2017. He followed that up with two more ratings of over 100 against the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots.

– Of course, his aforementioned game against the Patriots in Super Bowl LII resulted in him becoming the games MVP. Ultimately, he finished that game by outperforming Tom Brady accumulating completing 28-of-43 (65.12 percent) for 373 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
