5 things Rangers fans might not know about Lyon as Europa League opener beckons

Rangers are very much at home in the Europa League these days but this week face one of the more illustrious guests to grace the tournament in recent years.

Steven Gerrard 's side host Lyon in what promises to be a memorable night under the Ibrox lights on Thursday.

It wasn't so long ago the Ligue 1 heavyweights were stood on the brink of the Champions League final and while domestic disappointment last term ended with a place in the continent's second-tier competition, they remain a formidable side at this level.

They last met Rangers competitively all the way back in 2007 across two pulsating Champions League group stage ties.

The Ibrox men recorded one of their best European results with a 3-0 victory in France before Lyon - inspired by a young Karim Benzema - reversed the scoreline in Glasgow and ultimately secured knockout stage qualification.

Here, Record Sport Online puts together everything you need to know about Thursday's opponents.

Colour match

White is the base of the Lyon jersey but as with Rangers it's joined with blue and red as the club's primary colours.

The colours are borrowed from the city of Lyon's crest and their badge also features a lion, again just like Rangers.

And while that's hardly a revelation to anyone with eyes, perhaps lesser known if you don't follow French football keenly is their rivalry.

Much like in Glasgow, it pits the red, white and blue of Lyon against - you guessed it - the green and white of Saint-Etienne.

Sometimes simply referred to as "Le Derby", the clubs' close proximity - around 30 miles - led to a fierce rivalry building up in the years' following their first meeting in 1951.

Lyon have long since moved on from the site of Rangers' famous 3-0 victory on French soil all those years ago.

The Stade de Gerland was the classic venue at which Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley netted the goals in a treasured Champions League victory for Walter Smith's side.

Lyon decanted to the impressive Parc Olympique Lyonnais - also know as the Groupama Stadium - in 2016 and have played there ever since. Rangers themselves visited last summer for a pre-season tournament.

Parc OL holds 58,186 spectators, hosted matches at Euro 2016 and was the setting for the 2018 Europa League final between Marseille and Atletico Madrid.

A link to the past

There remains a link to those vintage Champions League tussles over a decade ago in the form of Remy Vercoutre.

Vercoutre played in goal for Lyon in both games against Rangers and nobody enjoyed more contrasting fortunes - shipping three in one game then somehow getting out of Ibrox with a clean sheet in the other, thanks in no small part to Jean-Claude Darcheville's infamous miss.

Vercoutre hung up his gloves in 2018 and worked as a goalkeeping coach for MLS club CF Montreal before accepting an offer to return to Lyon as part of Peter Bosz' backroom team.

He'll hold fond memories of Ibrox, given the result on his last visit, and will likely have a word or two for the current Lyon players over the deafening atmosphere they're about to encounter.

Stuttering start

Bosz' side haven't yet hit top form and sit seventh in Ligue 1 having taken eight points from a possible 15 in their opening run of five games.

That's included draws with Brest and Clermont plus a bruising 3-0 defeat to Angers.

Lyon beat Strasbourg 3-1 at the weekend and, in the second-half at least, showed signs of life with a much improved display.

Bosz has this week trained full focus on Rangers but his team do have the small matter of a trip to Paris Saint-Germain following hot on the heels of Thursday night.

Rangers will be well briefed on the threat they carry but Lyon are shipping goals in these early weeks of the season and Gerrard will rightly feel his team are just as, if not more, capable as Clermont or Angers in causing them problems at the back.

Danger men

There's very little chance anyone reading this article doesn't know who Moussa Dembele is so we'll skim over the former Celtic striker's talents for now, considerable as they might be.

Lyon signed Xherdan Shaqiri, another familiar name on these shores, from Liverpool during the summer but he's far from their only threat.

Houssem Aouar, Lucas Paqueta, Bruno Guimaraes and Thiago Mendes were all namechecked by Michael Beale this week as perhaps the most talented group of players Rangers have faced in Europe under the current management.

Aouar has long been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, and is one of the most aesthetically pleasing to watch players on the continent. He's one of those rare talents with the ability to receive the ball in just about any situation, thanks to a supreme technical ability.

Of course, Rangers fans don't want to see him showing off too much of that ability this week, but he's an undeniably exciting footballer.
