5 things new PM Liz Truss could do when she gets into office

It was announced at lunchtime on Monday, September 5, that Liz Truss would be the new UK Prime Minister following the Tory leadership contest. The appointment will be confirmed by the Queen at Balmoral on Tuesday, September 6.

After the long voting process, the person who would be Boris Johnson's successor came down to two candidates - Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak. But now, as the result was announced at 12.38 pm, and the new leader is declared, what can we expect from the new PM?

One of the headline-grabbing policies pledged by Liz Truss was her aim to launch an energy plan within a week. She told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg that she would "act immediately" to help with bills.

Another change reported during Liz Truss's campaign was a shift towards a German-style autobahn system would be adopted, where speed on motorways is unrestricted. The change would see an end to the 70mph speed limits on motorways.

As the nation battles with the cost of living crisis, the former foreign secretary said during her campaign for the leadership that she would reduce taxes and reverse the recent rise in National Insurance if she became PM. The rise came into effect in April.

In the twitter feed for her account which is titled 'Liz for Leader' she says: "I have a bold vision for our country and economy. I'm ready to deliver as Prime Minister from day one."

"As Prime Minister, I will unleash Britain’s potential by going for growth and removing the obstacles holding our country back. A growing economy is key to delivering for the British people and unlocking opportunity."
