5 Takeaways From Victoria Beckham’s Call Her Daddy: David’s Affair, Spice Girls & More

Appearing on Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy, Victoria Beckham spoke about everything from her time as Posh Spice in the Spice Girls to her fashion brand and her eating disorder.

Here’s the downlow for those of you who don’t have 1.5 hours to spare.

1. Beckham’s relationship with her body and food

The fashion designer and former Posh Spice spoke openly about her relationship with food.

“When you have an eating disorder, it makes you miserable,” Victoria continued. “It is sad. It is lonely. It is all-consuming. I was present for many years, but not truly present.”

Beckham went on to say that, as she did not trust anyone, she managed to “turn an unhealthy obsession with food into a healthy relationship” on her own, and the role her husband, David Beckham, played in her life.

“Understanding it’s about balance, it’s about being healthy, it’s about working out, and David helped me do that. David was the one who changed my workout around.”

The former Spice Girl also talked about having a conversation with her 14-year-old daughter, Harper Seven Beckham, saying “I just spent a bit of time talking to her about it so she could understand,” she said.

Cooper also asked Beckham about how she felt when TV presenter Chris Evans weighed her on live TV.

“I mean, it was so humiliating… Um, but back in the day, those things were acceptable,” she said.

2. On being “working class” and her rise to fame

Within the first few minutes of the interview, Beckham says, “I don’t come from a particularly privileged background. My parents were middle-class.”

When questioned by Cooper about the infamous Rolls-Royces her parents owned, which were mentioned in David’s documentary, Victoria goes on to say that her parents made a lot of money from her father’s business, which her siblings used to help with.

When talking about her rise to fame, Beckham said that about her experience being an awkward child who was bullied and that “the Spice Girls made me feel good enough. They turned me from being that morose seven-year-old into a confident, happy adult.”

She spoke fondly of her alter ego Posh Spice, saying, “I love Posh Spice, I really do.”

The 51-year-old also talked about Geri Halliwell’s abrupt exit from the group.

“She just left”, adding that they can “laugh about it now, but at the time we were like, ‘OK,’” she said.

3. Giving the nepo babies a chance

Nepo babies are always a contentious topic, and I’m sure you’ve seen the Beckhams’ oldest son, Brooklyn Beckham’s tutorial on how to make a grilled cheese, his photography book and several other career pursuits he’s made.

When speaking on her four kids and nepo babies generally, Beckham simply asked people to “Give the kids a chance. It’s not their fault.”

Beckham used her son Cruz Beckham as an example of the talent her kids harbour, saying  “plays about 10 different instruments” and “writes all of his own songs” he took a “real grassroots approach” to his music by playing in pubs around the country.

“Our kids are all genuinely good sweet kind human beings”

4. Beckham on her husband’s affair and public speculation

Cooper asked how the high-powered couple handle speculation around their marriage, implicitly touching on her husband’s affair, which both husband and wife have spoken about in David’s 2024 docuseries, Beckham.

The former Spice Girl side-stepped explicitly acknowledging the affair, instead saying “we’ve had so much thrown at us and we’ve always just been there together and just ridden the storm, ridden the damn storm.”

“And we were talking about it because we’ve recently celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary – by the way, people said it wouldn’t work, 26 years!” she said.

Beckham also reminisced on the beginning of their relationship and the efforts they went to keep their relationship private, which included David jumping out of a hotel window, “and do[ing] a walk of shame”.

Touching on the iconic purple outfit they wore after their wedding, Beckham said, “David looks like the dancing man emoji – that’s what the dancing man wears, but he owns it,” she said.

5. Beckham’s passion for fashion

The interview touched on the ups and downs in Beckham’s creation of her fashion brand, Victoria Beckham, and the vision behind it.

”Throughout the Spice Girls, I was the one who genuinely loved and appreciated the designer brands,” Beckham said.

I had a point of view, I had a signature from very early in my fashion journey because I was just wanting to create what I couldn’t find.”

Beckham spoke about the difficulties she faced financing the brand and the hard conversations she had to have with her husband when asking him for a loan.

“He’s always believed in me, he’s always supported me, but it was a difficult conversation to have because I was new to the industry as well.”

Victoria Beckham made it clear that she’s here to stay, and her fashion brand is here to make a mark. You can watch the full Call Her Daddy interview here:
