5-storey block of student flats to be created on site of Nottingham car park

A five-storey block of student flats will be built on the car park of a grand old textile factory in the city centre after plans for the project were approved.

The first phase of the wider revamp has been to convert Stanley House in Talbot Street into student accommodation, with more than 100 bedrooms.

The second phase is to build on the car park of the site which used to serve offices - and the application for the student serviced apartment scheme has now been given the green light.

Richard Singh, development director of BSP Holdings, which is behind the project, said: "The student market is thriving still, it will be complementing phase one of the building.

"We have had great support from the council and works will commence in summer 2021."

He added: "It's 45 beds, it's a mixture of clusters and studios, planning has only just been granted.

"Phase one was completed in January 2020, phase one is 107 studios and, again, it's high-end student accommodation.

"It's got a gym, it's got a cinema room, it's got funky communal space."

The second phase will complete a £20m scheme.

Speaking before about the history of the site, conservationist Ian Wells, of the Nottingham Civic Society, said: "Stanley House was built as a flagship Victorian factory by leading Nottingham benefactors the Lambert brothers.

"Its tower was said to have been built to rival that of St Mary's church, visible across the city in the Lace Market, with other roof features associated with Wollaton Hall, all important factors when the building was saved at a public inquiry through the representations of Nottingham Civic Society and the Victorian Society and replicated when the facade was rebuilt after its collapse a few years later.

"After that it was sympathetically converted to offices, and its noble facade to Talbot Street will remain in the latest plans."
