5 reasons Scott Brown to Aberdeen is a masterstroke as Celtic captain offers unique mix of tradition and evolution

The boos rained down on Scott Brown from three sides of Pittodrie in February 2018 as he burst into a hot-step that was a touch Monty Python and a little Vince McMahon.

But the away fans couldn't get enough of the iconic Celtic skipper's unique reaction in the wake of a reckless tackle from Shay Logan.

That moment encapsulated Brown and his vice-like grip over Scottish football as his team won again.

Back then, a move to Pittodrie in any capacity appeared an impossibility.

But the 35-year-old is the VIP option attached to the Stephen Glass ticket with the former Hibs team-mates favourites to usher in new era after Derek McInnes' departure.

An assistant boss-player role appears perfect for the man who is coming to the end of his storied career and is extremely keen on forging a path in coaching.

Brown has clashed with Logan and Graeme Shinnie plus countless others but it's never personal with the man who is hell-bent on winning.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack wants to freshen things up and the impending free agent would bring that working alongside current Atlanta United 2 manager Glass.

Record Sport looks at the reasons why this could be an inspired piece of business for all involved and should win over even the most doubting Dandie.

A dressing room presence

Even if Father Time is knocking on Brown's door - there's no doubt his incredible personality will always be an asset for any team. Genuinely, every player who has ever shared a dressing room with him reveres a man who behind the laughs is deadly serious about winning. There's a steely resolve that the 35-year-old possesses and that's for all to see considering the amount of times he's been consigned to the scrap heap by his doubters. Lewis Ferguson and Ross McCrorie are leaders in the making but working directly with a man who has lifted an incredible 24 trophies during his glittering career would make anyone better. Brown is close friends with Jonny Hayes and the pair were Lennoxtown's Chuckle Brothers during their Celtic days. Laughter has often been the best medicine for the midfield enforcer and his presence would certainly telling at Cormack Park.

Winning AND evolving

You say you want a revolution? Brown is the identikit figure you want in if you are mixing things up. Make no mistake, Aberdeen are aiming to evolve in terms of their style of football in the coming years. Glass is well versed in a passing-based style at Atlanta and Brown excelled under Brendan Rodgers and his revolutionary brand of possession-based football that changed everything for Celtic. The former Scotland skipper was never better, with his range of passing coming to the fore under the Irishman. Things usually go wrong at clubs trying something different when they are too rash and alienate players who have been drilled to play a different way. Brown will be leading from the front on the pitch and helping the manager and that allows a clarity of message to permeate throughout the whole team. He is the embodiment of a player who was able to change his ways and will be integral in making sure the wins keep coming.

Positional value

The Aberdeen side that so nearly ended Celtic's Invincible season in 2017 were a fine team - perhaps McInnes' best during his time with the club. The whole side was littered with good players but that midfield three of Ryan Jack, Graeme Shinnie and Kenny McLean has never been replicated. It's hard to find players of that quality consistently but Brown - even in his final chapter - would be a pivot in the heart of the midfield that is a pale imitation of the one that turned out at Hampden four years ago. McCrorie and Ferguson would learn heaps from a player who has thrived in a variety of formations and carried out a host of instructions for club and country.

Something to prove

Brown was always going to take some flak for Celtic's capitulation this season and there's a fair argument that his running battles have now overshadowed his on-field displays. He was ropey in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Dundee United but Brown has been more like himself after an iffy start to the campaign. When you put yourself out there to be shot at then you are eventually going to be downed when things don't go your way. Celtic hero Chris Sutton has made a compelling case for Brown to be a key member of the impending Parkhead rebuild. But, perhaps, the time is right for Brown to stage his redemption arc away from the club he has represented with distinction for 14 years. There appears no quick fix to cure the the Hoops' ills so sticking around might not offer the chance of instantly taking back the title from Rangers. Brown has silenced his naysayers before and the chance to do it again at Pittodrie could prove tempting.

More box office moments

Steven Gerrard admitted he was unaware just how big a big Aberdeen vs Rangers was when he rocked up at Ibrox in 2018. The bad blood is very real and the fixture would receive another jolt if the Celtic icon is added to the mix four times next season.

It's peak Scottish football and you can just imagine the thrills and spills that are sure to follow. Brown is probably fully aware this his 'Last Dance' and a final tango with his ultimate rivals would be a bigger ratings winner than Strictly Come Dancing.
