The Arizona Cardinals have the eighth overall pick in the NFL draft tonight but do not have a second-round pick because of the trade for receiver DeAndre Hopkins. According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, they are a team interesting in trading down in the first round.
There are a number of possibilities because of rumors of teams being interested in moving into the top 10.
What are some potential trade-down scenarios?
Moving down to No. 14 in a trade with Tampa Bay
The Bucs are rumored to be targeting one of the top four tackles in the draft to give new quarterback Tom Brady the protection he needs to get the ball to his many receiving weapons.
However, to move back from No. 8 to No. 14, it might not net the Cardinals a second-round pick unless they add another pick or perhaps throw in a player like linebacker Haaason Reddick, a player drafted originally by the Cardinals when Bruce Arians, now the coach of the Bucs, was coaching in Arizona.
The belief is that Tampa wants to keep its second-round pick to target a running back.
Moving down to No. 15 in a trade with the Broncos
This scenario has already been reported. The Broncos seek a receiver like Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy. Could the Cardinals get a second-round pick in return? Perhaps, but trade value charts show that Denver would be giving up too much. Denver, though, has three third-round picks to work with.
Moving down to No. 16 in a trade with Falcons
The Falcons could be in play to target a cornerback. If Jeff Okudah falls to No. 8, they might be willing to give up a lot. They also might want to make sure they get CJ Henderson and try to leapfrog the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have been connected to him.
The Cardinals should be able to get Atlanta’s second-round pick in the deal.
Pick up 2 1st-round picks from Dolphins or move down to No. 18
This seems like a crazy scenario, but the rumor has been thrown around. The Dolphins might be willing to package the 18th and 26th picks in the first round to move up to No. 8. Whether it is a particular tackle or potentially a quarterback after they get a tackle with the fifth pick. They would be overpaying, according to trade value charts. They could also give the Cardinals the 18th and 39th picks, which works out better in terms of the trade chart.
Move down to No. 21 in a deal with Eagles
The Eagles apparently want a top receiver. It would mean the Cardinals move the furthest in the first round, all the way to the 21st pick. The Cardinals could get the Eagles’ second-round pick and more, potentially a pick in the 2021 draft.
