5 potential salary cap casualties that could interest the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2020 NFL offseason with a need for dynamic playmakers on offense as Howie Roseman and company look to upgrade the defense at several pertinent positions also.

With the Eagles needing playmakers and upgrades on both sides of the ball and reduced prices, here are five potential salary-cap casualties that could interest the Birds:

1. A.J. Bouye, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars cornerback is due $15.4 million next season and his recent play doesn’t suggest that he’s worth that type of money anymore. At just 28 years of age, Bouye has both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors on his resume.

2. Gio Bernard, RB, Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals can save $2.8 million in cap space if they release Bernard this offseason and the Eagles can always use an extra playmaker on offense. Bernard offers nothing on special teams, so he’d simply be a third-down or change of pace option for Miles Sanders.

3. Xavier Rhodes, CB, Vikings

He’s no longer an elite player, but Rhodes would certainly be the most talented and seasoned cornerback on the Eagles roster if he was added. Rhodes made his third Pro Bowl in 2019 but had a subpar season and with 3-years left on his deal, the Vikings can save more than $8 million in 2020 by releasing him.

4. Marcell Dareus, DT, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are projected to be over the salary cap and can save $20 million by parting with Dareus. The 30-year-old veteran is coming off of core muscle surgery, he could be a quality addition for a team needing defensive line help up the middle.

5. Olivier Vernon, DE, Cleveland Browns

New Browns general manager Andrew Berry has talked about aggressively acquiring talent and walking away from Vernon, who is set to make $15.5 million in 2020 with none of it guaranteed, would be the perfect start. Injuries limited him to 10 games, and he finished with just 26 tackles and 3.5 sacks in Cleveland, but can still be a solid pass rusher who could flourish in the Eagles rotational system.
