5 pictures that sum up Rangers glory night as 21 year European record continues

Rangers continued their sparkling early season form by winning their first Europa League away match under Steven Gerrard on Thursday night.

It continued a run that has lasted since a loss to Valencia in 1999 and has seen the Ibrox club undefeated in their opening fixture of a European group game.

Conversely the men from Govan had also gone 13 years without a win on away soil in such lofty company, so the result is one that will mean a lot to the manager and his players.

It was a hard-fought and even game until the biblical floods that descended brought a touch of anarchy to proceedings.

And it was amid the downpour that Kemar Roofe produced the moment he is certain to be remembered for as he scored almost certainly the best goal in Rangers ' European history.

From 55 yards out, his incredible shot flew over the Belgians' keeper to spark wild scenes.

It was a moment that will not be forgotten in a hurry in a match full of great moments.

Here are the five pictures that tell the story of the game.

The captain grabbed his ninth goal of the season and his fifth penalty by firing the ball into the bottom corner with power and accuracy. The keeper got a hand to the ball but the pace with which it was hit proved decisive. The right-back has been Rangers best player this season and looks to be bursting with confidence. He missed three penalties from five last season but after five out of five so far this season he looks to be the main man from 12 yards.

Fans return

There may have only been around 3000 in the Stade Maurice Dufrasne but it was terrific to hear a crowd reacting to the tumult of a football match once again. The piped-in crowd noise used by broadcasters certainly makes TV coverage feel more normal but nothing matches up to the passion generated by a few hardy souls backing their side. The famous Jock Stein quote "Football without fans is nothing" that adorned the stadium is always in place but carried special significance on the night given their return.

Crazy conditions

At one stage it was getting so bad you wondered how the game could continue, but the referee bit the bullet and played it to a conclusion. The rain began belting down on around the 60 minute mark and within 10 minutes the pitch was a veritable quagmire. The ball held up constantly and players were unable to pass the ball along the deck or control properly. The last 20 minutes became something of a lottery as it became clear the pattern of play had been altered indefinitely by the weather.

Roofe's incredible goal

It's not often you can say with certainly that you have just witnessed the best goal in a club's European history, but you could last night. The strike alone from 55 yards would have been incredible enough, but the power and skill displayed before it made what followed even more jaw-dropping. Roofe held off three players before smashing home from inside his own half. There's a reason millions of people have been sharing the video far and wide as everyone from Piers Morgan to CNN has their say on a moment that will live in the club's history.

The bust-up

The Belgians were incensed at Roofe's A and L celebration thinking, wrongly, it represented a slur relating to his time in the Jupiler Pro League. It is in fact a symbol relating to his two daughters and nothing to do with his career. It was unfortunate then that something so innocent would spark an ugly melee and Standard's coach Eric Deflandre disgraced himself with his ridiculous behaviour going forehead to forehead with the striker.
