5 people shot in Philadelphia, 2 miles away from Wednesday's mass shooting

PHILADELPHIA _ Five people were shot Thursday afternoon in the Ogontz section of North Philadelphia, just 24 hours after six police officers were shot in a gunbattle that terrorized the Tioga neighborhood _ on the very same street, just over 2 miles away.

None of the injuries on Thursday appeared life-threatening, police said.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., police responded to reports of multiple people shot in the 5800 block of North 15th Street.

Two victims were transported by police to Einstein Medical Center. One was taken by medics to Einstein. Two others arrived by private vehicle to the hospital.

The victims apparently were men who had been shot in the hands, arms or legs, police said.

There was no immediate report of an arrest.

On Wednesday, six officers were wounded by gunfire that erupted about 4:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of North 15th Street.

A standoff lasted for nearly eight hours around a rowhouse where the alleged shooter, Maurice Hill, was barricaded along with two officers who were trapped upstairs. The two officers and three people they had handcuffed were safely removed during a SWAT operation around 10 p.m., and Hill later surrendered.
