In something akin to the vogueing dance culture of 1980s New York, a collegiate support system of ‘fashion houses’ has developed among London’s emerging design talent, who, despite the odds, are surviving and excelling in the game.
We invited five of them to a photography studio in east London (it was more like a nightclub) to gather in front of the camera as ES Magazine records this exciting new wave of London designers reshaping the runway scene.
As London Fashion Week gets under way, the world’s style press and fashion buyers descend on the capital in their thousands. It’s here, over six days, that a record-breaking number of designers will show their clothes and accessories for the season ahead. And it’s big business: last year alone the British fashion industry generated a whopping £32bn for the UK economy.
But it’s the new generation, those young designers and graduates from our world-beating fashion colleges and art schools, who are sparking the most interest this week. And, despite adversity and cuts in government arts education funding, the capital’s fashion innovators are finding new ways to create and collaborate on clothes. Move over, Paris. London is burning...
