5 missing after Navy helicopter crashes off San Diego coast, search under way

SAN DIEGO – A U.S. Navy helicopter carrying six crew members crashed into the ocean off the coast of San Diego Tuesday afternoon, the Navy said in a statement. A search for its crew is ongoing.

One sailor was rescued from the water, said Navy Lt. Sam Boyle, a 3rd Fleet spokesman in San Diego. Five are missing, the Navy said late Tuesday evening.

The MH-60S was operating off the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln conducting routine flight operations. The crash occurred about 60 nautical miles from shore, the Navy said.

Search and rescue operations from the air and sea are ongoing involving multiple Coast Guard and Navy assets, the Navy said.
