5 key Celtic training camp objectives for Ange Postecoglou from solving transfer jigsaw to wantaway stars

It's a fortnight since Ange Postecoglou arrived at Lennoxtown but it's from this week his Celtic reign will gather pace.

The new manager has gathered his squad for a pre-season training camp in Wales with plenty of work to be done ahead of a Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland.

It's just 15 days until Celtic kick off against the Danes but first they face a vital - and likely gruelling - nine days at Dragon Park in Newport.

Postecoglou has a to-do list the length of his arm before the new season kicks off in earnest, not least in conducting transfer business and implementing his philosophy on the players.

Record Sport Online narrows it down to 5 key objectives from the trip to Wales.

New captain decision

Perhaps the most straightforward call Postecoglou will have to make early in his tenure.

Callum McGregor looks a shoo-in for the role, having deputised for Scott Brown on numerous occasions and just appearing the all-round natural fit for the role.

With the squad set to enter a state of flux, McGregor will be a reliable constant for the manager given his long-time association with the club and importance to the team over the years.

Of course, Postecoglou could deliver a curveball and select his own man, but it would be a considerable surprise.

Make his mark

The manager has acknowledged that time is of the essence this summer, with the clock ticking rapidly down towards the all-important meeting with Midtjylland.

Hours on the training pitch are precious moments for bosses and Postecoglou bank on these nine days as crucial in getting his message across to the players.

Free of outside distractions and not yet bogged down in the mire of constant fixtures, this is where the 55-year-old will hope to make his mark.

Postecoglou's high-octane style will take time to implement and he will not yet have all the pieces in place for it, but expect to see it taking shape in the three bounce games against Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic and Bristol City.

Assess second chance stars

Celtic need to shake off the misery of last season as quickly as possible, and there's a debate to be had over whether retaining too many of those involved is the way to do so.

But the converse approach, which Postecoglou appears to be taking, is to offer clean slates to impress under a new regime.

Leigh Griffiths and Tony Ralston have been given another chance, while the sight of Boli Bolingoli on the plane to Wales was a particular surprise.

How much can be read into the Belgian's involvement remains to be seen, but it suggests Postecoglou wants a look at every single player, regardless of what's come before.

Identify gaps

The manager will have been quickly filled in on squad depth and potential problem areas in advance of his arrival, as evidenced in how quickly he's moved to chase targets.

Analytics and stats play a key role in recruitment but the old-fashioned eye test still has its place.

This is where things could get interesting. Postecoglou may yet decide he fancies an unfancied player for a certain position, or look for something different in an area already perceived to be well-covered.

Nine days are but a fraction of the long season to come but they could be pivotal in shaping the manager's thinking.

Manage wantaway stars

Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard have travelled to Wales but it's far from certain they will be part of Postecoglou's long-term plans.

Ajer has already expressed his desire to leave this summer and Norwich City are the latest club to circle around the centre-back, while Edouard is likely to attract further interest despite missing out on a move to Leicester City.

Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton wrote on Saturday that the manager cannot afford to carry passengers and recommended he either convince wantaway stars to knuckle down and get the move they deserve, or keep them far away from the training camp.

Postecoglou has decided to keep Ajer and Edouard, plus the likes of Olivier Ntcham, in the fold. Yes, these guys might not be at the club for much longer but had he left them behind he risked creating a sideshow with the potential to disrupt focus on a crucial week in his tenure.

Postecoglou will be confident he can rely on the players' professionalism, regardless of what their future ambitions may be, and will be satisfied if Celtic return from Wales without any of them becoming the main story.
