5 J-League targets Celtic could move for as Daizen Maeda deal set to open transfer floodgates

One signing is officially confirmed at Celtic and fans will be hoping the floodgates are well and truly open.

It was no mystery Daizen Maeda would be joining permanently but after a promising start to life at Parkhead, Ange Postecoglou will be pleased to formally tie him down.

He's just one of the Australian's J-League success stories though joining Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi at Celtic Park.

And it seems likely the Japanese contingent will only grow in the months and years ahead as Postecoglou looks to build a lasting legacy.

He knows the market so well and while links with Mohanad Jeahze and Francisco Ortega suggest the wide-ranging approach to scouting will continue, it likely won't be long before we see another arrival or two from the Far East.

Although Postecoglou admits it's harder to sign players from Japan in the European summer window with the J-League season in full swing, he's likely to try his luck.

He landed top scorer Kyogo last summer after all.

Here are just a few of the names that could crop up on the transfer wishlist.

Tsukasa Morishima (Sanfrecce Hiroshima)

Though just 25, Morishima can already consider himself a stalwart at Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

His six years of service have yielded more than 150 appearances and he's been a consistent creative force in that time.

Morishima has 16 goals to his name since his debut back in 2016 but six of those have come in just 18 games this season - showing he's starting to know where the goal is.

He's a deadly free-kick taker too and while he hasn't quite hit the heights that earned him his two Japan caps back in 2019, he is on course for the best goalscoring season of his career.

If Postecoglou still keeps an eye on his old team Marinos, then Morishima's stunning double against them earlier in the season likely caught his eye.

Just like Kyogo, he's out of contract at the end of 2022 – so a cut-price deal could be on the cards.

Takahiro Akimoto (Urawa Red Diamonds)

Left-back is a position in which Celtic need depth with Boli Bolingoli currently the only natural cover for Greg Taylor.

The problem is signing someone who will be willing to play second fiddle and compete for minutes with Taylor and Josip Juranovic, who often picks up minutes in that position when Anthony Ralston plays on the right.

One solution to that would be picking up a player who can fill in elsewhere and Urawa Red Diamonds utility man Akimoto certainly ticks that box.

A natural left-back, he's filled in at centre-back, centre-mid and even as an auxiliary striker this season when backs have been against the wall.

He's a true jack of all trades and the type of player who could be useful if Celtic are to mount an offence on all fronts next season.

Keisuke Kurokawa (Gamba Osaka)

Another option on the left side of defence is bombing wing-back Kurokawa who has impressed this season for Gamba Osaka.

He's something of a late bloomer having only broken into the side at 23 but he's racking up the appearances now and has been one of their star turns this season.

Accustomed to playing in a back four or a back five, he can also fill in on the right side of defence making him the perfect counterpart to Juranovic.

His relative inexperience means he is still raw at 25 and his end product needs some work.

But perhaps there is a diamond in the rough there for Postecoglou to work with.

Ryoya Ogawa (FC Tokyo)

Mr consistent for Tokyo, Ogawa has been an ever-present when available in the league this season.

A key part of the side who won the Japanese League Cup in 2020, he's as experienced as you'll get for a player in his mid-20s and never goes hiding on the big occasions.

Ogawa is another left-sided star who can play in midfield, left-back or centre-back – although his relatively diminutive stature means he's unlikely to go into the heart of a back four in Scotland.

He's in the mould of Reo Hatate in terms of his boundless running and is one of the leaders in the Tokyo dressing room.

Atsuki Ito (Urawa Reds)

With Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton departing, there is room for a new central midfielder at Celtic and they don't come much better in Japan this season than Atsuki Ito.

The 23-year-old has been one of the standouts in a sub-par Urawa Reds side and looks a real gem.

He won't replace the creativity of Rogic but with David Turnbull and Matt O'Riley pushing for minutes, there is plenty of talent available to pick up that slack.

Instead Ito would provide something more akin to Callum McGregor as he isn't afraid to get stuck in and rarely gives the ball away.

That said, he is capable of playing higher up the pitch and has a Rogic-esque ability to hold on to the ball and turn defence into attack.
