5 interesting stats from Jets’ Week 2 loss to Browns

Following a disappointing loss to the Bills to open the season, Week 2 was more of the same for the Jets.

New York fell flat on its face on Monday night football, dropping to 0-2 with a 23-3 loss to the Browns in which nothing went Gang Green’s way. The Jets lacked an offensive identity with their inability to provide sufficient protection for their quarterbacks, which led to Trevor Siemian suffering a potentially season-ending injury. New York’s lack of discipline as far as penalties are concerned reared its ugly head yet again against Cleveland.

Monday night’s action was relatively uneventful, but some eye-opening numbers did stem from New York’s second loss of the season. With that being said, here are the five most interesting stats from Week 2.

199th Overall

(Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

When Trevor Siemian went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter, Luke Falk’s named was called. Ironically, the circumstances surrounding his unexpected appearance mirror that of a division rival’s nearly two decades ago.

Falk was picked 199th overall in the 2018 draft — the same spot as Tom Brady in 1999. Falk and Brady are the only QBs picked 199th overall in the last 20 years. Both were called upon to replace injured starters to make their NFL debuts.

Unfortunately for Gang Green, that’s where the similarities end. It’s highly unlikely Falk is the next Brady and the Jets aren’t expecting that out of him. They just need him to be serviceable with Sam Darnold and most likely Siemian out for the foreseeable future.

7 Straight Losses at Home

(Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

The Jets lost their seventh straight home game as their MetLife Stadium woes continue. New York’s losing streak at home is the longest active streak in the NFL.

It looked like the streak was going to end after going up 16-0 on the Bills in Week 1, but the Jets have now been outscored 40-3 at home since.

New York will have another crack at a home victory against the Eagles in Week 4, but with the current state of the team, it remains to be seen if the streak will be broken anytime soon.

Odell Who?

(Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports)

Gregg Williams gave the Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. bulletin board material leading up to Monday night, but Beckham Jr. didn’t need any extra motivation in his return to MetLife Stadium.

Beckham outgained the Jets entire wide receiver room on Monday night, catching. six passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, New York’s receivers caught 10 passes for 125 yards combined.

0-2 Start

(Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

Since the NFL adopted its current eight-division structure in 2002, 140 teams have started the season 0-2. Only 16 of those teams have made the playoffs.

With the performance the Jets put together against the Browns and the team’s current injury situation, it’s hard to envision them being the 17th team to accomplish that feat. However, anything can happen on any given Sunday. The immediate future seems grim, but don’t count the Jets out just yet.

The QB Carousel Continues

(Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports)

With Luke Falk entering the game for an injured Trevor Siemian, the Jets became the first team to play three different quarterbacks in its first two games of a season since the Carolina Panthers in 2009.

The Jets quarterback carousel has continued in unchartered fashion. It’s likely that this is not the end of it, as they need to sign a backup quarterback to replace an injured Siemian.

If Falk were to succumb to an injury at any point, the carousel will continue.
