5 injured in River North, Englewood stabbings

Dec. 13--Five people were injured in two separate stabbing incidents downtown and on the South Side early Saturday, police said.

About 3:05 a.m., one man was in serious condition and a second man was wounded after they were stabbed by a third man during a fight over a woman in the 200 block of West Erie Street in the River North neighborhood, Chicago police spokesman Ron Gaines said.

The ages of the three men involved in the incident were not immediately available.

One man suffered stab wounds to the back and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, Gaines said. The second man was stabbed in the leg and was treated and released at the scene.

The third man, who allegedly stabbed the other two, suffered superficial cuts to his fingers and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Charges are pending against him, Gaines said.

A knife was recovered at the scene, where police blocked off a portion of a sidewalk with red tape between Wells and Franklin streets on Erie Street.

No other details were immediately available.

Less than a half hour later, about 3:30 a.m., a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were injured in a stabbing incident in the Englewood neighborhood, police spokeswoman Bari Lemmon said.

The incident happened in the 5300 block of South Damen Avenue, Lemmon said.

The 21-year-old was stabbed in the neck, and the 20-year-old suffered a wound to the arm, Lemmon said.

Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions stabilized.

No other details were immediately available, Lemmon said.
