5 held for duping people with ‘gifts from abroad’

NEW DELHI: Five people, including a foreign national, were arrested by the crime branch for duping people on the pretext of sending gifts from abroad. Police said the mastermind of the case was a SIM card dealer. He activated about 1,000 fake SIM cards and gave them to his gang members to make calls and dupe people.

The complainant, Vijay Kumar, 39 told police that he had been cheated of Rs 1.6 lakh on the pretext of receiving gifts from abroad.

During the inquiry, a team led by inspector Anil Sharma arrested four people, including a foreign national, said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Amit Goel. The accused were identified as Kamal Lohar (32), Saurav (31), Vishal Singh (25), and Ben Ali Diarra (23) (Nigerian national). Later, police nabbed the mastermind from Tughlakabad. He was identified as Tanweer Hussain (23).

Hussain, who worked at a telecom shop, used to activate numbers using documents given by customers when they visited to port their mobile numbers.
