Karnataka: 5 held for blackmailing, cheating doctor of Rs 1.2 crore over medical seat

BENGALURU: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths recently arrested five men for allegedly duping a 47-year-old doctor from Kalaburagi of Rs 1.2 crore. They had promised to get a seat for his son in a medical college and later honey-trapped him when he demanded his money back.

The accused are Nagaraj Siddanna Boroti, 36, Mallikarjun Wali alias Om Prakash, 38, both from Kalaburagi, and Madhu Shekar alias Madhu, 28, Hameed, 31, Basavaraju, from Bengaluru. Cops recovered Rs 25 lakh cash, 25 grams of gold and fake wireless sets from them.

According to police, Nagaraj and Mallikarjun knew the doctor well and promised to get a medical seat for his son in a city college.

"Nagaraj took over Rs 1.7 lakh from the doctor in February 2021 and paid the cash to the medical college to book the seat. Then, Nagaraj took Rs 66 lakh from the doctor, saying it was the first fee instalment. However, he did not pay the money to the college, instead spent it for personal purposes. In mid-2021, the college management, citing non-payment of fee, cancelled the admission. The doctor discovered that Nagaraj had never paid the fee and in January 2022 demanded the latter return Rs 66 lakh. Nagaraj asked the doctor to meet him in a hotel room in Majestic to collect the money," a police source said.

Accordingly, the doctor arrived at Majestic in the second week of May and checked into the hotel room booked by Nagaraj. He said Nagaraj had also arranged his train ticket to Bengaluru. During the journey, two girls travelling from Maharashtra befriended him.

"When the doctor was inside his hotel room, the girls entered and were speaking to him. Two men, posing as CCB police, arrived and threatened the doctor, accusing him of engaging sex workers. They demanded Rs 50 lakh from the doctor to not register a criminal case. The doctor pledged his property documents to take a loan of Rs 50 lakh and handed it over to the men," the officer said.

The doctor lodged a complaint with Upparpet police. The case was subsequently transferred to CCB.
