5 Eredivisie stars Rangers could sign as Gio van Bronckhorst ready to plot transfers

From the low of watching Steven Gerrard exit stage left, Rangers fans are now very much enjoying that new manager buzz.

Gio van Bronckhorst is the new man in charge and he's arrived in Glasgow ahead of officially starting work at the club next week.

As all new bosses do, he'll want to make his mark on the squad and has undoubtedly already done due diligence on what he's inheriting.

First and foremost, mind you, Van Bronckhorst will be looking to retain key players in January, especially given the prospect of Gerrard returning with intent to lure some of his former charges down to Aston Villa.

But if Rangers do lose anyone in January, some of the arriving funds could go to the new manager.

With a vast knowledge of the Eredivisie, Van Bronckhorst could well look to his homeland for new signings.

Here are five potential options.

Joey Veerman

The arrival of a manager with vast Eredivisie experience is bound to reignite speculation surrounding Rangers and Heerenveen midfielder Veerman.

Veerman made clear his desire to move on during the summer and Steven Gerrard was heavily linked with a move for one of Dutch football's most highly-rated players.

But, with Serie A side Hellas Verona also registering an interest, Heerenveen stood firm over a valuation that no club was willing to pay.

With money being the issue preventing Veerman getting his move, Rangers potentially reigniting their interest is perhaps a matter for next summer, unless they receive a sizeable fee for one of their own players in January.

Rangers and Ross Wilson have jumped on pre-contract opportunities in recent seasons - snaring the likes of Jack Simpson, Nnamdi Ofoborh and Fashion Sakala just last term.

With the future of Connor Goldson still uncertain, centre-back contingency plans are a certainty.

Rangers have already been linked with Vitesse defender Doekhi as his current contract runs towards a conclusion next summer.

That situation rumbles on despite him being named club captain during the summer.

Doekhi is a colossus of a defender and his age and aforementioned contract status fits the business model Rangers are looking to adopt.

That being said, they won't be the only ones interested when the 23-year-old is freed up to speak to other clubs come January.

Elayis Tavsan

Named the Eredivisie's young player of the month for October, Tavsan looks to be a forward with a promising future.

Not bad, considering this is his first season in the Dutch top-flight.

Operating primarily from the right flank, he helped NEC Nijmegen to promotion with an 11-goal haul last term and, as his recent accolade shows, appears capable of handling the step up.

Tavsan has already attracted interest from Turkey and Italy, according to ESPN. But he's publicly stated he won't be going anywhere "for the money".

At Rangers, he could be offered the chance to compete for trophies and play European football - the ideal apprenticeship if he does harbour ambitions to one day play at the very top.

Adam Maher

With interest in Glen Kamara set to mount - Aston Villa and Gerrard are already taking a look - midfield is another area where van Bronckhorst and Wilson will be assessing their options.

He makes a mockery of this statement every season, but Steven Davis can't go on forever and Rangers will need engine room evolution at some stage.

Once rated among Dutch football's top prospects, Maher is an elegant midfielder with a keen eye for a pass.

He didn't quite hit the heady heights predicted when he emerged as an 18-year-old, despite once being touted for a move to Tottenham - but he's enjoyed a sold Eredivisie career with the likes of AZ and now Utrecht.

At 28, he may not represent great resale value for Rangers but they've shown a willingness to be flexible in the market when the situation dictates.

Maher would be a decent and relatively inexpensive option.

The Ajax forward is out of contract come the summer and is very much a fringe figure with the Dutch giants, making sporadic appearances this season.

But he enjoyed a prolific campaign on-loan at FC Twente in 2020/21, scoring 17 times in 33 appearances.

Most of his appearances this campaign have come for the U21 side and despite the fact his first-team prospects look bleak, a Dutch report earlier this month indicated Ajax would like to extend his contract.

There may well be a way back into the side for Danilo, but it feels as though a new deal may simply be to ensure Ajax don't lose him for free next summer.

But that decision is now down to the player and he will be free to speak to other clubs come the New Year.
