5 dead, 18 wounded in shootings citywide

June 04--Five people were killed and 18 others have been wounded by gunfire since late morning Friday, including a teen accidentally shot dead in Bridgeport, two men injured at a union hall on the Far South Side, and two people shot on the Stevenson Expressway.

At 5:20 a.m. Saturday, a 32-year-old man was sitting in a parked car in West Englewood when someone approached and shot him in the head. He was pronounced dead on the scene in the 6300 block of South Honore Street.

At 3:15 a.m. Saturday, a man was shot dead in Longwood Manor, police said. Witnesses said he was approached on the sidewalk in the 900 block of West 96th Street by two males who fired shots, hitting him in the head and body. He was pronounced dead on the scene. His age was not immediately available.

At 2:50 a.m., a 35-year-old man was found dead in an alley in the 200 block of North Laramie Avenue in South Austin. Officers responding to a call of a person shot found him in the alley. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two men were shot, one fatally, in Logan Square at 6:45 p.m. Friday, police said. Daniel Alcantana, 20, of the 900 block of North Harding Avenue, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene in the 2900 block of West Armitage Avenue, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. A 21-year-old man was shot in the right leg and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Earlier Friday, a 16-year-old boy was killed after what police and his family said was an accidental shooting in the Bridgeport neighborhood. Christian Bandemer of the 900 block of West 36th Street was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the chest with a shotgun at 11:35 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. The teen was in the 3500 block of South Parnell Avenue as his friend and cousin showed him the shotgun and it accidentally went off.

Later Friday night, two men were shot at a union hall on the Far South Side, law enforcement sources said. They were in a parking lot near James Hamby Union Hall, 13550 S. Torrence Ave., at 9:50 p.m. when they began arguing with a man they knew, who pulled a gun and shot them each in the leg. The men, ages 40 and 44, got themselves to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Indiana.

The expressway shooting occurred about 9:40 p.m. Two people got themselves to St. Anthony Hospital with gunshot wounds after being shot in the northbound lanes of the Stevenson Expressway near King Drive, according to Illinois State Police. One was treated and released, and the other was transferred to Stroger Hospital; his or her condition was stabilized. Police did not immediately have information about the victims' ages or genders. State police recovered three shell casings from the area.

Other shootings:

At 3:55 a.m., a 34-year-old woman was shot in West Lawn. She was driving in the 6400 block of South Keeler Avenue when someone in a vehicle behind her fired shots, hitting her in the shoulder and hand. She went to Mount Sinai Hospital. Police initially said the shooting occurred near the intersection of 70th Street and Karlov Avenue, but that information was later corrected.

At 3 a.m., a 14-year-old boy was shot in an alley in Englewood. He was in the 700 block of West Marquette Road when he heard gunshots and was shot in the ear. He went to Comer Children's Hospital, and his condition was stabilized.

At 2:55 a.m., a 31-year-old man was found in the West Pullman neighborhood. He was discovered in a blue van in the 12700 block of South Halsted Street with a gunshot wound to the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was stabilized.

At 2:05 a.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man was shot in East Garfield Park. He was in the 500 block of North Springfield Avenue when he heard gunfire and realized he had been shot. He went to Stroger Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the leg. His condition was stabilized.

At 1:30 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the first block of North Mason Avenue in South Austin. He went to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower back. His condition was stabilized.

At 12:15 a.m. Saturday, two people were shot in West Humboldt Park. A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were on the sidewalk in the 4100 block of West Potomac Avenue when they heard gunfire. The man was shot in the buttocks, and the woman was shot in the lower right leg. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, and their conditions were stabilized.

At 12:05 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot on a porch in West Englewood. He was with a group in the 2000 block of West 71st Street when someone in a nearby gray sedan fired shots. He was shot in the hip and went to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was stabilized.

At 11:40 p.m. Friday, a 49-year-old man was shot in West Garfield Park. He was on the sidewalk in the 4600 block of West Erie Street when someone fired shots and he was grazed in the chest. He went to Mount Sinai Hospital, and his condition was stabilized.

At 11 p.m., a 20-year-old woman was shot in the 1100 block of West 72nd Street in Englewood. She got herself to St. Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left arm. Her condition was stabilized.

At 10:05 p.m., a 35-year-old man was shot in Ravenswood. He was on the street in the 4700 block of North Virginia Avenue when someone approached on foot and fired shots. He went to Swedish Covenant Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. His condition was stabilized.

At 9:40 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in West Pullman. He was in the 300 block of East Kensington Avenue when someone in a gray sedan fired shots. He was hit in the buttocks and got himself to Advocate Trinity Hospital. He was slated to be transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center. His condition was stabilized.

At 6:40 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot in Ashburn. He was on the sidewalk in the 7700 block of South Trumbull Avenue as a vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired shots. He was hit in the leg and went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.
