CHICAGO _ Two gunmen opened fire outside a barbershop, hitting three boys and two men who were inside getting their hair trimmed Thursday evening on Chicago's West Side.
Paramedics got the call at 6:17 p.m. of the attack in the 200 block of North Pulaski Road in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, said Deputy District Chief Curtis Hudson, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
At the scene a short distance from the barbershop, Chicago police Deputy Chief of Patrol Ernest Cato told reporters two gunmen walked in, kind of looked around, then walked right back out. Moments later, both shot from the street through the front window, hitting the customers.
It was too soon to determine a motive, but the victims _ ages 11, 12, 16, 30 and 40 _ were expected to survive, said police Sgt. Rocco Alioto and Cato.
The youngest person in the shop at the time was a "toddler," who was not injured, according to Cato.
"We have to do something about this violence," Cato said. "And this is going to be a cooperation with the community and organizations. This will not be tolerated anymore."
The attack happened at 234 N. Pulaski Road, tweeted police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. The victims were getting their hair cut when someone opened fire in the business, said Chicago police interim Superintendent Charlie Beck at an unrelated event.
All victims' conditions were stabilized, said Chicago police interim Superintendent Charlie Beck.
The three boys were all taken to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Hudson said. One man was being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition, while the fifth patient took a private ambulance to a hospital, Hudson said.
The 11-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to the back, abdomen and left arm; the 16-year-old was shot in the right hip; and the 12 year-old was shot in the right knee, police said.
The 30-year-old man, shot in the left arm, got himself to Loretto Hospital, while the 40-year-old, who suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh, was recovering at Mount Sinai.
Detectives were on scene, canvassing and retrieving video, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted.
