5 Brands That Quietly Cut Portion Sizes by Over 30%

By Larry D. Moore, CC BY 4.0, Link

Ever noticed your favorite snack just doesn’t fill you up like it used to? You’re not imagining things. Many major brands have been quietly shrinking portion sizes by over 30%—without reducing prices. It’s a strategy known as “shrinkflation,” and while it’s subtle, it hits consumers hard over time. Companies rely on changes to packaging, shape, and labeling to disguise the cuts, leaving customers paying more for less without even realizing it.

1. Gatorade: New Bottles, Smaller Sips

Gatorade once came in the familiar 32-ounce bottle that fueled workouts and sports games for years. Now, many stores carry a redesigned version with just 28 ounces—nearly a 13% cut. But here’s the twist: the new bottle design looks more modern and sleek, which distracts from the reduction. On top of that, the price remained the same, and in some places, even went up slightly. Fans of the drink may not have realized they were getting fewer electrolytes for the same amount of money.

2. Doritos: Fewer Chips, Same Bag Size

If your chip bowl has been feeling a little emptier, Doritos may be the reason why. Frito-Lay, the brand behind Doritos, quietly reduced the standard bag size from 9.75 ounces to 9.25 ounces—a more than 5% cut. But when you factor in how much of the bag is just air, that reduction feels even more significant. Over time, Frito-Lay admitted to the change, citing rising costs of ingredients and transportation. Though it may not sound like much, that small cut in portion sizes adds up over multiple purchases.

3. Chobani Flip Yogurt: Smaller Cups, Same Price

Chobani’s “Flip” yogurt cups used to offer 5.3 ounces of creamy yogurt goodness with a crunchy mix-in. Today, many of those containers have been downsized to 4.5 ounces—a reduction of about 15%. The cup looks identical, but the contents inside have been slimmed down without any major announcement. With prices remaining the same (or increasing), consumers are now getting noticeably fewer spoonfuls per pack. It’s a classic example of how shrinkflation affects portion sizes without changing the customer’s shopping habits.

4. Tillamook Ice Cream: A Pint No Longer Means a Pint

Tillamook, a popular brand for ice cream lovers, used to sell its products in full 56-ounce cartons. Recently, they downsized their cartons to just 48 ounces—a reduction of about 14%. But more surprising is that many other ice cream companies have shrunk even further, with some dropping down to 14-ounce containers. While the cartons still look large and satisfying, the smaller volume means fewer scoops per container. For those keeping an eye on value, this shift in portion sizes feels particularly bitter.

5. Wheat Thins: Fewer Crackers Per Box

Wheat Thins, a staple snack for many, used to come in 16-ounce family-size boxes. In recent years, many packages have quietly shrunk to 14 ounces or less—a cut of over 12%. The packaging, however, still boasts the same colors and branding, making the change less obvious to busy shoppers. Nabisco, the parent company, did not openly advertise the change, but it reflects a broader trend across snack brands. Fewer products in every box means you’re paying more per cracker, whether you realize it or not.

Your Shopping Cart Might Be Lighter—Even If Your Bill Isn’t

As inflation pressures rise, many brands are turning to downsizing rather than raising prices outright. These silent reductions in portion sizes allow companies to maintain profits while avoiding sticker shock for consumers. But the end result is the same—you’re paying more for less. To protect your wallet, start checking product weight and serving size instead of just the packaging. When you know what to look for, it’s easier to make smarter decisions and avoid falling for shrinkflation tricks.
