5. Jacksonville at Minnesota
LINE: Minnesota -10
ATS PICK: Jacksonville
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
This is the apology pick.
Last week, our No. 1 NFL pick against the spread was Cleveland -7 over Jacksonville. It wasn’t asking for the world considering the Browns are good at professional football and Jackson really, really isn’t, but the pick was mostly based on one key element.
Mike Glennon.
The Jacksonville starting quarterback hadn’t done much of anything in years, and he wasn’t all that great when he was the starter at Chicago, and Tampa Bay, and Arizona, and Oakland.
The guy threw 31 passes in two seasons and then he was being thrown into an ugly situation as the Jaguars pushed that much harder in the Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes. And then a funny thing happened …
He wasn’t miserable.
He wasn’t great – hitting 20-of-35 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns – but he didn’t throw any picks, he kept pressing, and the Jaguars almost pulled it off in a 27-25 loss.
The Vikings have the parts back, the receiving corps should go off on a Jaguar secondary that gives up the most yards per attempt in the NFL, and …
The Vikings can’t stop the run lately.
It’s a big 10-point spread against a Jaguar team that got rocked with regularity earlier in the season, but kept all these losses to ten points or fewer in four of the last five games.

NEXT: Indianapolis at Houston
4. Indianapolis at Houston
LINE: Indianapolis -3
ATS PICK: Indianapolis
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Yeah, the Texans have been better lately, but playing Jacksonville, Detroit, and getting by New England helped the cause. Those were the three wins in the last four, and now they get to host a very, very angry guest.
The current good run by the Texans is one of the reasons the line is relatively low, but it’s also because Indianapolis got trucked by Tennessee last week 45-26.
That’s what we call in the old country, an aberration.
Does Houston have Derrick Henry? No. It has a token running game that’s the second-worst in the NFL.
Does it have a killer defensive front that can hold up against the Colt offensive line? No. It has a line that gives up rushing yards per chunks and doesn’t force enough big plays.
Does Houston have Will Fuller? No. It has Deshaun Watson, but he can’t throw it to himself – the Texan receiving corps is now a bag of bleeeech.
No Fuller, no ground game, and a motivated Colt team with the lines to hold up …
Philip Rivers and the Colts will bounce back from last week’s disaster with a good performance.
Speaking of bouncing back …

NEXT: Las Vegas at New York Jets
3. Las Vegas at New York Jets
LINE: Las Vegas -7.5
ATS PICK: Las Vegas
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
We’re all adults here. We’re all sophisticated enough to speak frankly.
There’s no reason to make this more complicated than it has to be.
Sam Darnold isn’t good.
The Jets are going to have the No. 1 overall pick for a reason, nine of their 11 losses were in blowouts, and the two others that weren’t decided by more than 7.5 points was partly because Joe Flacco was under center.
Meanwhile, Las Vegas failed to get off the bus in a strange 43-6 loss to Atlanta last week when nothing worked except the team’s ability to keep giving the ball away to various Falcons.
A freak out over that clunker is part of the reason why the spread is so manageable, and there might be some thought that the Jets really are improving – the defense hasn’t been all that bad.
Maybe losing two out of the last three by six points or fewer matters.
Maybe the Raiders not having RB Josh Jacobs around this week is a big deal, and maybe it’s because the team from Vegas has to play in the cold, along with a second straight game in the Eastern Time Zone.
Maybe it’s because Las Vegas hasn’t blowing teams out on the road.
Maybe the world thinks Darnold is due.
It’s the Jets. The spread should be double-digits.
NEXT: New England at Los Angeles Chargers
2. New England at Los Angeles Chargers
LINE: Los Angeles -1.5
ATS PICK: New England
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
A few weeks ago, we went with a weak and murky college theory for the Charger game at Miami.
Sometimes – defying all X and O logic and reason – a team just doesn’t know how to win.
Maybe it’s because the team puts itself in a position where bad things can happen, or maybe the team has a young quarterback who’s still figuring it out, or maybe it’s just because – when it’s on the line – a team just can’t come through because it doesn’t have the confidence.
That’s was Los Angeles, as it went on a strange run of inventing new and creative ways to lose games in the final moments. Oh sure, there were a few wins along the way, but those were against Jacksonville and the Jets – you get an extra orange slice for beating those two, but that’s it.
Meanwhile some teams just know how to win close, tight games.
There but for a Cam Newton fumble against Buffalo, the Patriot would be on a good roll. New England doesn’t really throw all that much, it relies on controlling the clock, and it needs Bill Belichick to be Bill Belichick each week.
But the Patriots are finding ways to win close games.
New England will control the clock for an obnoxious amount of time, it won’t give the ball away like the Chargers will need, and the defense will stop Justin Herbert on that one late drive for yet another close win.
And another close Charger loss.
NEXT: New Orleans at Atlanta
1. New Orleans at Atlanta
LINE: New Orleans -3
ATS PICK: New Orleans
– Bet on this, BetMGM latest line
Some teams just know how to get by other teams.
The 49ers have the Rams number this year – Jared Goff was on a tear, and then the San Francisco secondary made him look like he couldn’t play anymore.
Tampa Bay is having a strong season, but New Orleans embarrassed Tom Brady and company to start the season, and did it even harder on a spotlight Sunday night game a few weeks ago.
Atlanta and New Orleans just played on November 22nd, and the Saints won 22-9.
What makes you think the Saint defense is going to have any less luck against a Falcon team that might not have Julio Jones or Todd Gurley – and they’l both be hobbling if they’re back.
The Taysom Hill experience is working just fine. It’s helping the Saints control games on the ground even more, and the defense is taking care of the rest.
The Falcons are coming off a 43-6 blowout over Las Vegas thanks to five takeaways, they’ve won three of their last four, and …
The New Orleans defense has allowed fewer than ten points in three of the last four games, and it gave up 13 in the outlier.
Atlanta was one of those teams, and the Saint coaching staff might have this all figured out.
The three points aren’t a lot to give away to find out.
