If you’re retired and especially if you’re on a fixed income, then stocking up on some essential items can help you prepare for possible trade war related price increases. According to NPR, some grocery items whose prices are likely to rise include seafood, coffee, rice, nuts and beef. The best items to purchase will have a long shelf life or be able to be frozen — and you may want to grab a treat or two as well. Here are the Aldi items that retirees should buy now amid trade wars.

Premium Thin Cut Boneless Center Cut Pork Chops

  • Price: $4.79 per pound

The great thing about buying these pork chops from Aldi is that you can separate them into portions and freeze them for later. Because these are thin, they’ll also thaw out relatively quickly, so if you’re running late for supper, you’ll be able to get them out of the freezer and onto the stove pretty fast.

Black Angus Beef Choice Boneless Chuck Roast

  • Price: $7.49 per pound

While beef from Canada is likely exempt from tariffs (according to The Western Producer) and most black angus beef is raised in the U.S., it’s another good food to buy now amid the trade wars because you can freeze it and use it later. Saving on this Black Angus Beef Choice Boneless Chuck Roast from Aldi now can help free up room in your budget for other foods if prices continue to go up.

Deluxe Mixed Nuts With Sea Salt

  • Price: $14.29

Aldi stocks a variety of nuts, and because most nuts are imported, prices are likely to rise as the trade wars continue. Nuts have a long shelf life, so you can store them for quite a while, and they make a great snack or topping for yogurt. Grabbing a few bags of Deluxe Mixed Nuts with Sea Salt from Aldi can keep you snacking even amid high prices.

Earthly Grains Jasmine Rice

  • Price: $6.85

Tariffs on products imported from Thailand, like Earthly Grains Jasmine Rice, have the potential to raise prices of products coming from the country. Right now, a 5 pound bag is just $6.85, and because rice stores well, you can keep it on hand in case your grocery budget gets tighter in the coming months.

Coho Salmon

  • Price: $11.19 per pound

Because much of the U.S.’s seafood supply is imported, it’s vulnerable to price hikes due to tariffs, according to Reuters. Aldi’s Coho Salmon is $11.19 per pound and you can freeze it now and then thaw it out for later meals.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
