With food prices soaring, grocery shopping is taking a big bite out of Americans’ monthly budgets. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food prices were 2.7% higher in March 2026 than in March 2025.

For retirees on fixed incomes, the increase in costs can be significant. Smart shopping can help keep finances on track. Experts shared these tasty, budget-friendly freezer finds from Aldi that are ideal for seniors looking to save.

Season’s Choice Steamable California Medley

  • Price: $1.29

The Season’s Choice steamable California medley from Aldi is an easy, quick side dish that requires little effort and is a good deal, according to Jennie Alley, chef and senior recipe developer at Budget Bytes.

“A 12-ounce bag stretches into two to three servings, bringing the cost to about 43 cents per serving,” she said. “Frozen foods help reduce waste, which is a hidden cost many people overlook, especially in smaller households.”

Using only what you need is a great way to avoid food or money waste. “It makes a noticeable difference over time [in your budget],” Alley added.

Kirkwood Chicken Breast Fillets

  • Price: $8.69

Chicken is a freezer staple that’s versatile, convenient and easy on your wallet. A 2-pound package of Kirkwood chicken breast fillets from Aldi contains 10 4-ounce servings, which comes to 87 cents per serving.

“For meal prep, I am a big fan of component prepping-instead of making full meals ahead, cook a protein like chicken and mix and match it with frozen vegetables and pantry staples,” Alley said.  “Pairing chicken with vegetables and a simple sauce like soy sauce, garlic and a little honey creates a stir-fry for under $2 per serving.”

If you want to add rice or pasta to the meal prep, Alley said that keeps meals from feeling repetitive.

Whole and Simple Mediterranean Chicken Quinoa Bowl

  • Price: $4.25

For a single meal, the Whole and Simple Mediterranean chicken quinoa bowl is a more balanced, cost-effective option than eating out or ordering in.

“This is a full meal in a bowl and includes protein, whole grains and vegetables, which helps keep you full longer,” said Melanie Musson, retail finance expert with Quote.com.

Mama Cozzi’s Frozen Pizza

  • Price: $3.09

Mama Cozzi’s frozen pizza is a fulfilling meal that won’t break the bank.

Aldi’s freezer section has affordable, low-effort options like this pizza brand, which is especially important when cooking on a fixed income,” Alley explained.

Season’s Choice Chocolate-Covered Peanut Butter Bananas

  • Price: $2.55

Season’s Choice chocolate-covered peanut butter bananas are a creamy, sweet treat that’s one of Aldi’s most popular items.

“These delicious frozen delights are just 48 cents per ounce and will satisfy any sweet tooth,” Musson said.

As food costs continue to climb, budget-friendly grocery choices can go a long way for retirees who want to save money
