5 49ers stories from last week for Cardinals fans to know

The week is over and we have reached the moment to check in with each of the teams around the NFC West to see what is new with the Arizona Cardinals’ division rivals.

What is new with the San Francisco 49ers?

Here are five stories from last week Cardinals fans should know.

The 49ers announced their training camp schedule finally. While that might not be particularly interesting to Cardinals fans, one thing is worth noting. The 49ers will have 11 public practices for fans to attend. That is fewer than the Cardinals will have in training camp.

K Robbie Gould still uncertain

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers used the franchise tag on Gould, who has been stellar as their kicker the last two years. He has not signed his tender and has not agreed to a long-term deal, He also does not want to play in San Francisco, preferring to be closer his home and family. However, things look even bleaker for the 49ers, who don’t really have another good plan at kicker.

Niners’ 21 personnel is great

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

While the NFL moves further away from using fullbacks, the 49ers continue to not only use one but have great success. Their 21 personnel, using a running back, fullback, a tight end and two receivers, is one of the most prolific units in the entire NFL.

Jimmy Garoppolo not expected to play much in preseason

 Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Garoppolo is coming off a torn ACL and did not get cleared medically for 11-on-11 work in offseason work. He hopes to be fully cleared for training camp but how much he plays in the preseason is not known yet. However, it is expected to be limited, which could affect his timing and play early in the season.

Niners expect more big plays from Dante Pettis

Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Pettis put up good numbers after the catch, leading to a solid per-catch average for yards gained. He is expected to continue to make big plays, especially after the catch.
