5 49ers stories from last week for Cardinals fans to know

Another week has passed and it is time to again take a trip around the NFC West to see what is going on with the Arizona Cardinals’ division rivals. What have the San Francisco 49ers been up to?

Here are the stories from the last week Cardinals fans should know.

Kicker Robbie Gould’s holdout continues through minicamp

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers used the franchise tag on Gould, who is 36 years old. He has not yet signed it. He wants a long-term deal or would like to sign somewhere in the Midwest. However, this isn’t a normal holdout. He did not report to mandatory minicamp, but he technically doesn’t need to be there because he isn’t under contract. However, San Fran only has one kicker, second-year player Jonathan Brown, on their roster.

Both starting tackles sit out Day 1 of minicamp

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

While Gould has not reported, another pair of key players did not practice to start the week of minicamp. Tackles Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey both did not practice at the start of minicamp but it wasn’t out of any contract dispute. Both are recovering from injuries. McGlinchey has a knee issue and Staley is recovering from a pec strain.

TE Garrett Celek out 2 months after back surgery

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Celek has been out with a back injury but now his return will be further delayed. He had back surgery and is expected to miss the start of training camp. He also is still under league concussion protocol and can’t be tested again until training camp.

Deebo Samuel has hip injury

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

The Niners have had the injury bug hit their draft picks. First-round pick Nick Bosa has a hamstring injury that will keep him out until training camp. Now second-round pick Deebo Samuel, a receiver, has a minor hip injury. He did not practice the final two weeks of the offseason program.

Some good injury news for 49ers

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

The Niners have dealt with more than their share of injuries, even during the offseason. However, there is good news for some major injuries. The three players they have coming off ACL surgeries are on track to have full training camps. QB Jimmy Garoppolo, RB Jerick McKinnon and LB Kwon Alexander should all be good to go next month when training camp begins.
