5 2019 Cardinals rookies whose 2020 roles probably won’t change

Several of the Arizona Cardinals’ rookies in 2019 should have bigger roles in 2020. Others aren’t likely to. Here are the rookies whose roles likely won’t increase much in their second season.

S Deionte Thompson

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Thompson split time on the field with fellow rookie Jalen Thompson after D.J. Swearinger was cut. However, his playing time disappeared with the emergence of Jalen. With Budda Baker already a Pro Bowler and with the emergence of Jalen and the possibility of the team adding a veteran at the position, Deionte probably won’t be more than a special teamer in 2020 unless there is an injury or he makes huge strides.

Gaillard didn’t get to play a single snap in 2019. Unless things go wrong with injuries, he likely won’t again in 2020. The team wants to re-sign A.Q. Shipley. They have Mason Cole. The best he could expect is to be the main interior backup if the team doesn’t bring back Shipley and Cole is the starter.

OL Joshua Miles

Miles was inactive for most of the year. If he makes the roster in 2020, he will likely again be a backup. Backup linemen typically only play when there are injuries and he probably will be behind the primary tackle backup unless he has progressed a lot.

DL Michael Dogbe

Harrison Barden-USA TODAY Sports

Dogbe was inactive some games and played limited snaps in others. That is probably what he will do in 2020. He will be a rotational player like this past season.

DL Miles Brown

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Brown’s role was very similar to Dogbe’s. Because the Cardinals are likely to upgrade the talent on the defensive line, that is probably the same role he will play next year if he remains on the roster.
