5,000 strong Leeds Black Lives Matter protest saw no arrests, say police

Leeds police say protest which saw more than 5,000 attendees ‘passed off peacefully’.

A protest organised by the Leeds Black Lives Matter (BLM) branch took place yesterday (June 22) at Hyde Park, Woodhouse Moor yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police, who were at the scene on horseback and with vans, revealed no arrests were made at the event which was planned in the wake of George Floyd’s death in America.

Prominent black figures from Leeds were present also at the protest and were among the speakers for the day, including Bishop Perry, Khadijah Ibrahim, Arthur France MBE and the BBC's Sanchez Payne.

The rally marks the second week of protests held in the city after the Black Voices Matter protest that took place at Millenium Square last week (June 14).

The BLM event had strict rules in place to ensure people were social distancing and were adhering to government guidelines during the coronavirus crisis.

There was also a number of volunteers around the park offering attendees face masks and hand sanitizer.

BLM said: "Thank you all for joining us today. To our speakers and to all who made this happen. Our work doesn’t stop today, it’s just beginning. Thank you for standing with us today. Go home, be safe and we will carry on tomorrow."
