5,000 people a day using Glasgow Subway despite stay at home order

The number of people travelling on Glasgow's subway network is more than three times the number seen at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Subway bosses have revealed more than 5,000 people a day are currently using the service despite the stay at home order.

In December, around 8,500 people were travelling on the subway on weekdays when Level 4 restrictions were in place across Greater Glasgow.

During the last national lockdown in March into April, that figure was only around 1,500.

All non-essential shops, hospitality, visitor attractions, schools and universities are currently closed as part of the Level 4 restrictions imposed on Greater Glasgow.

Nicola Sturgeon has announced statutory guidance for employers to allow employees to work from home where possible.

Speaking on Wednesday, the First Minister said: "We intend to strengthen the obligation on employers to allow their staff to work from home whenever possible.

"The law already says that we should only be leaving home to go to work if it is work that cannot be done from home. This is a legal obligation that falls on individuals.

"However we will now introduce statutory guidance to make clear to employers that they must support employees to work from home wherever possible.

"For all employers, the basic but vital message is this - if your staff were working from home during the first lockdown, they should be working from home now and you should be facilitating that."
