5,000 concerts to be cancelled if Boris announces lockdown lifting delay

5,000 concerts will be cancelled over the next month if Boris Johnson today announces a delay to lifting lockdown, according to the BBC.

The Prime Minister was today expected to announce that the last stage of lockdown lifting would go ahead on June 21 - including the reopening of nightclubs and allowing large events.

But after a sudden rise in the Delta variant of Covid across the country he is now expected to announce a four-week delay.

That will mean lockdown restrictions in England staying in place until at least July 19.

According to the BBC this will cost the hospitality sector £3billion - and will see 5,000 music events cancelled.

A BBC reporter said: "Think about nightclubs, they have been closed for 15 months. An extension means that nine out of 10 of them - 90 per cent - fear they will have to close."

She added: "Festival season is upon us, or should be, an extension of restrictions by four weeks its estimated an estimated 5,000 concerts will have to be cancelled - think of all the revue and jobs around that."

The BBC said in the case of a four-week delay, will cost an estimated £3bn in lost revenue in hospitality - pubs, restaurants and hotels.

A health minister today said restrictions on weddings could be lifted - allowing more than 30 guests.

Experts have warned the third wave of coronavirus has already begun in the UK.

A four-week delay will allow 10million more vaccines to be delivered.

There are fears the Delta variant is more able to evade vaccination - particularly if people have only had one of the two required doses.
