£4k of heroin found on driver caught speeding

Police pulled over a speeding car near Scone before handcuffing the “nervous” passenger and carrying out a drugs search on him.

But as they did so, 31-year-old Liverpudlian Daniel Williamson became agitated, started waving his hands about and tried to break free.

That resulted in a white bag falling from his clothing, which he immediately stamped on, Perth Sheriff Court was told.

More bags, later confirmed to contain heroin, then fell to the ground and he continued to stamp on them in a bid to “destroy” the contents.

Depute fiscal Chris Mackintosh said more officers arrived as “further bags fell from his person and he continued to stamp on them.”

A violent struggle ensued and one constable suffered a bleeding nose as Williamson attempted to break free.

Some of the bags were ripped and others burst open during the resultant melee.

The accused was then taken to Perth Police HQ where he complained that his handcuffs were “too tight.”

And as an officer went to check, yet another bag of white powder fell from Williamson’s jacket and he again stamped on it.

Mr Mackintosh said the total weight of the class A drug was 101.48 grammes and had a “maximum potential street value” of £4050.

The accused, of Bowley Road, in the Old Swan district of the Merseyside city, was remanded in custody while background reports are prepared.

Sheriff Gillian Wade warned him that it was “likely” he would receive a custodial sentence when he returns to court on November 15.

He appeared on indictment and admitted intentionally obstructing police on the A94 Perth to Forfar road, near Scone, on December 16 last year.

He also pled guilty to having heroin in his possession with intent to supply it to others.

Mr Mackintosh explained that police were carrying out a static check on a Sunday when they observed a vehicle “travelling in excess of the speed limit.”

It was requested to stop and the driver “immediately exited” his side of the car.

He “appeared nervous,” according to the fiscal.

Williamson, who also looked nervous, then told police there was “maybe a warrant out for his arrest in Liverpool.”

The officers, who were aware that drugs were often trafficked between Liverpool and Perth, then decided to carry out a search.

Solicitor David Holmes said the accused had never served a period of imprisonment but had “come to court expecting to go elsewhere.”

No bail application was made on behalf of Williamson who had brought a rucksack and bag with him.

He admitted several previous convictions, including one from March, 2018, for possession of cocaine and cannabis.

Williamson appeared at court less than two weeks after Perth and Kinross area commander CI Ian Scott warned of criminals in England moving drugs north into, and through, Perth and Kinross.

He told the PA: “Members of the public can help by being aware of members from English cities who suddenly appear in your communities, particularly if they are befriending young or vulnerable people.”
