49ers waive LB, open RB Trey Sermon’s practice window

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a handful of roster moves as they gear up for a Thursday night bout vs. the Tennessee Titans. Among those moves they released linebacker Tyrell Adams, opened the 21-day practice window for running back Trey Sermon.

Adams has primarily been a special teams contributor in four games with San Francisco. He was on the active roster for Weeks 7, 9, 13 and 15. His lone defensive snap came in Week 13 in Seattle. The club could aim to re-sign him to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Sermon went down with an ankle injury while covering a kick in the 49ers’ Week 12 win over Minnesota. He went on injured reserve after the game and missed the required three contests. Now the team has 21 days to either activate the rookie or leave him on IR for the rest of the season.

Running back depth has been a problem for the 49ers this year with veteran Brian Hill getting a pair of call ups from the practice squad in the last two weeks. Sermon’s role hasn’t been expansive this year, but with Elijah Mitchell sidelined by a knee injury there’s a chance Sermon could see additional action if he suits up Thursday and Mitchell remains out.
