49ers waive/injured OL Erik Magnuson

The 49ers continued tweaking their roster ahead of training camp Thursday when they waived/injured offensive lineman Erik Magnuson. Magnuson dealt with a calf injury during the offseason program according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

A player who is waived/injured will revert to the team’s injured reserve list if he doesn’t get claimed by a team. From there he can either stay on IR and rehab or reach a buyout agreement that makes him an unrestricted free agent.

It was the fourth roster adjustment of the day, along with the release of defensive back Alex Brown, and the signing of rookies Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel.

Magnuson joined the 49ers in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan. He played tackle in college, but slid around to several spots on San Francisco’s offensive line over his two seasons. He played in eight games with three starts, including two as a rookie.

It looked like Magnuson was in the running for a starting job during training camp last year before getting hurt in mid-August, and his versatility appeared to make him a valuable reserve option long term.

An injury to center Weston Richburg opened the door for Magnuson to scoop up a start in the middle of the offensive line last year in Arizona. It did not go well, and he capped it off with a bad snap on the final play of the game. He didn’t play another game the rest of the season.

The 49ers report to training camp Friday.
