49ers vs. Bengals: 3 things that stood out in the 2nd quarter

After a first quarter that saw the 49ers use the passing game to score twice, the running game stepped up in the second quarter. They scored once to give the 49ers a 24-10 lead heading into the half.

Here’s what stood out in the second quarter:

Bad plays from Garoppolo

Garoppolo had a couple of rough plays to start the second quarter with one resulting in a turnover. He was first called for a false start when he forgot the snap count. On the play after the penalty, he was intercepted by William Jackson on an overthrow to Richie James with five Bengals in the area.

The running game

The 49ers have 94 yards on 14 carries through the first half with a big contribution from Matt Breida. On third-and-1, Breida appeared to be stopped multiple times behind the line of scrimmage before making several Bengals miss tackles en route to a 34-yard run. Jeff Wilson finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to put the 49ers up 21-7.

Deebo Samuel involved in the offense

Kyle Shanahan seemed to want to get Deebo Samuel more involved in the offense late in the second quarter. After zero targets in the first quarter, Samuel saw two passes come his way, including a screen pass that gave the rookie room to run on a gain of 38 yards. Through the first half, Samuel has two receptions for 45 yards. He also had a drop on a throw down the field.
