49ers VP of Player Personnel to interview for Texans GM job

The Texans made waves across the NFL on Friday when they fired general manager Brian Gaine. Now 49ers vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew is an early candidate in Houston’s search for a general manager. He was in Houston on Sunday to interview for the job according to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager.

Mayhew has been with the 49ers since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s arrival in 2017. He first served as a senior personnel executive for the last two years, but was recently promoted to VP of player personnel.

He spent 15 years in the Lions’ organization beginning in 2001, and was eventually elevated to the role of general manager in 2008 after Matt Millen was let go. Mayhew joined the 49ers after one year in the New York Giants’ front office in 2016.

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see 49ers’ coaches and front office staff become popular candidates for other NFL teams. Especially if they take a step forward in 2019 and make the postseason.
