The 49ers are set to make a veteran addition to their secondary. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, safety Johnathan Cyprien is going to join San Francisco after spending last season with the Falcons and Eagles.
Cyprien, 29, was the No. 33 overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent four seasons in Jacksonville before joining the Tennessee Titans for the 2017 season. A torn ACL in training camp knocked him out for the entire 2018 campaign. He remained a free agent until the following August when he signed with the Eagles. Philadelphia traded him to the Falcons after he played just one game for them. Atlanta had him for four games but eventually placed him on Injured Reserve with a foot injury.
It’ll be interesting to see where Cyprien fits in the 49ers’ defense. He’s a very good run defender, but he’s not been particularly adept in coverage throughout his career.
He won’t battle for a starting job, but he’ll be in the mix for a reserve strong safety spot alongside Marcell Harris and undrafted rookie Jared Mayden.
If he’s healthy, his experience could make him a valuable addition in the 49ers’ secondary.
