49ers swap long snappers, add OL to practice squad

The 49ers on Tuesday made a pair of roster moves unrelated to their issue at left tackle. They signed long snapper Jon Condo, waived long snapper Colin Holba, and added offensive lineman Will Holden to the practice squad.

There’s no word on why San Francisco made the switch from Holba to Condo. They added Holba, 25, last season ahead of Week 14 when long snapper Kyle Nelson was suspended 10 games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Holba played the final four games last season, held the job through camp and the first two games, and was then released in favor of the 38-year-old Condo. Condo was twice a Pro Bowler during his 11-year stint with the Raiders. He also spent a year in Dallas as a rookie, and played four games for the Falcons last season.

Condo figures to snap until Nelson is ready to resume his duties after Week 7. The 49ers re-signed Nelson to a four-year, $4.5 million deal in the offseason.

Holden, 26, was a fifth-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2017 draft out of Vanderbilt. He played in seven games as a rookie with five starts, then saw action in four games with two starts in his second season.

Between his first and second seasons in Arizona, he bounced from the Colts’ practice squad to the Saints’ practice squad. He spent parts of the offseason with Miami and Seattle before landing with the 49ers.

Holden was a college teammate of 49ers rookie tackle Justin Skule. He was a three-year starter for the Commodores, including two seasons at left tackle. San Francisco badly needs help on their offensive line with Joe Staley out for six-to-eight with a broken fibula, and Holden may wind up finding time on the active roster if the team isn’t confident in Skule and Daniel Brunskill.
