49ers still reign supreme in NFL’s best division

The 49ers’ 9-0 win over Washington was ugly. The good news for San Francisco is that the standings don’t reflect style points. They earned a victory Sunday and stayed atop the NFC West, which now has a claim to the best division in football.

Here are the NFC West standings through Week 7:

49ers (6-0)
Seahawks (5-2)
Rams (4-3)
Cardinals (3-3-1)

Seattle suffered a 30-16 defeat at home to the Ravens, pushing them further back of the division-leading 49ers. Additional separation between them and San Francisco could play a significant role in the coming weeks. They’re in Santa Clara for Monday Night Football in Week 10. Staying ahead of their division rival creates a larger margin for error in that divisional showdown.

Los Angeles snapped their three-game losing streak with a 37-10 romp against Atlanta on the road, and the Cardinals fended off the Giants’ comeback attempt for a 27-21 victory in New York.

The NFC West is the only division in football with every team above the .500 mark. San Francisco is the top team in the NFC, but by no means are they running away with the NFC West. Through seven weeks there’s a clear favorite in the division, but the 49ers aren’t running away with it.
