49ers-Steelers: 3 things that stood out in 2nd quarter

The offense committed two more turnovers, but the defense has played well, holding the Steelers to zero points in the second quarter. Robbie Gould put the 49ers on the board with a 24-yard field goal.

Trailing 6-3 going into the half, here’s what stood out in the second quarter:

Another turnover

The 49ers hoped the second quarter would be different than the first, starting with the ball at the Pittsburgh 25-yard-line. On the first play of the quarter, Raheem Mostert broke loose for a first down but Minkah Fitzpatrick forced a fumble, abruptly ending the 49ers drive. The defense was once again able to stymie the Pittsburgh offense to force a punt.

The defense is holding on

The defense held the Steelers offense to just three plays for two yards after a fourth turnover by the offense. Pittsburgh’s offense has averaged 2.6 yards per play and converted on two-of-seven third downs. The defense has also held the Steelers to just six points despite four giveaways by the 49ers offense.

Offense finally gets on the board

The 49ers second drive that didn’t result in a turnover resulted in points. The offense was able to hold onto the ball for a nine-play, 43-yard drive that ended in a Gould 24-yard field goal. Jimmy Garoppolo has taken a beating today. He’s been hit six times after only being hit three times the previous two games.
