49ers signing RB Kerryon Johnson to practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers will add depth at the running back position after losing Raheem Mostert for the rest of the season.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers are signing veteran running back Kerryon Johnson to the practice squad.

On Tuesday, Mostert announced via social media that he would miss the rest of the season due to surgery on his injured knee. His absence leaves the 49ers with only rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell and veteran JaMychal Hasty available at running back on the 53-man roster.

A second-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2018, Johnson has rushed for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns over 34 career games. The Philadelphia Eagles claimed him off waivers in May but released him off injured reserve in August.

Johnson played three seasons in Detroit. He will provide a veteran option on the practice squad for coach Kyle Shanahan.

Mostert rushed for 20 yards on two carries before exiting on Sunday with the injury. The 49ers got 104 rushing yards from Mitchell in his NFL debut.
