49ers signing former Cardinals 1st-round QB Josh Rosen

There will be a familiar face for the Arizona Cardinals on the San Francisco 49ers sideline on Saturday when the two teams play. Josh Rosen, the Cardinals’ first-round draft pick in 2018, is joining the 49ers on their active roster.

According to multiple reports, first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates and Adam Schefter, the 49ers signed Rosen of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad.

Rosen was the No. 10 overall pick in 2018, started 13 games for the Cardinals in their 3-13 campaign and then was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2019 after Arizona selected Kyler Murray No. 1 overall in the draft.

After one season with the Dolphins, he was cut before this season began. He has spent the year on the practice squad with the Bucs, coached by former Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians.

The 49ers found themselves with only one healthy quarterback this week. Jimmy Garoppolo is on injured reserve. Nick Mullens, his replacement, suffered an elbow injury on Sunday and Josh Johnson was placed on the COVID list. C.J. Beathard will start against the Cardinals but with no other quarterbacks, they are adding Rosen.

They are taking advantage of a new rule the league has allowed. Normally, a player must clear COVID testing protocols with five days of negative tests before he can sign. The league recently has changed it so that a player who is current with his testing on another team can be signed immediately, provided he travels privately and does not miss a test.

Rosen will likely be the 49ers’ backup against the Cardinals. It will be the first time he faces his former team.
